They moved up the hierarchy.

Interesting that that's what Christianity was supposed to be about before it got mixed with the Roman empire. That's not a go at Catholics, seems it has happened wherever Christianity become a state religion. - organized and state being the operative words

I imagine most Buddhists would be in favour of peace, love and passive resistance.

I agree with the other poster about drugs. I'm not against drugs per se, but even cannibas can fry people's brains (met someone who was hospitalized due to psychosis brought on by too much smoking). Acid etc, again mind-expanding if treated with respect rather than as self-indulgent escapism.

The anti-globalization movement has some of the hippie ethos, but we live in a more cynical age, anyway the hippie movement was an incarnation, not an utterly new thing.

idealism seems often to be the provence of the young, you know ... the hippie thing about don't trust anyone over 30... what happened when they hit thirty, ... people get more grounded for good and bad. practical/overly conservative

LOL...I'm an original Sixties Flower Child, and those are still my ideals. I was a "Jesus Freak" then, and I'm still a "Jesus Freak" today.
You can live, and even work, without having to sell out your ideals. And no, I'm definitely not living off of "Daddy's money".
Theta made a good point, though, about "certain vested interests" adding drugs to the mix. Even some of the "Jesus Freaks" tripped and fell into the acid vat.
So, in the end, the Establishment won, and, as you see, we are back where we were, involved in a war that is really about nothing but oil.

Where, oh, where, are the young people who ought to be taking our places?????????????

Unfortunatly that spiritual awakening and movement towards
peace and love was diliberately sabataged by the addition of drugs to the mix. Psychadelics like LSD were the most damaging (these drugs have long term effects.)
The ideals are still there, basic in all of us. The ability and drive to do anything about it is what has been lost.
Drugs will do that to a person. They mimic increased spiritual awareness, but then leave the individual incapable of action. This was known by certain vested interests at the time.
(I was there in the 60's and narrowly escaped the trap myself)

Peace , love and passive resistance may have been ok, but free love, not working, and being dirty a lot of the time were not. I enjoyed some of that, but was happy when I found Jesus and my life changed after that. I have never regretted the change.

Your comment is funny because in a way it answers itself. The hippies were on the right track, but they all gave up and sold out the truth they were so close to for the money.

They started to want cars and nice houses and better jobs and completely sold out to the system they so vocally renounced.

Now they are the establishment they once saw as the enemy.

Sad but true.

Love and blessings

Those are all fine ideals. The mistake the hippies made were being known for their deep indulgence into drugs, which in turn made the majority of the country not take them seriously.

As a baby boomer I was there. I'm retired from mans work doing the Lords work now. Yes those days were great. I think one of the basic foundations was a stranger was just a friend they hadn't met yet. Those days had the good and bad as in any era. I truly miss them.

e*Jim Darwin hit a nail on the head there.
