When I went to Ephesus, in Turkey, I studied some about it first. I read-several times-that Mary was mentioned in the NT only a few times, of no great consequence. The Catholic Church was trying to convert the people here, but they would not give up their worship of the goddess Diana. So, to counteract this, the church brought in the concept of Mary, giving her a goddess like effect, so they could slowly move out Diana and bring Mary in, and the people to the church. The people now could keep their goddess concept which was so important to them. And, this is where the idea of Mary as something special came into being.

Just because she is the virgin spoken of by the prophets does not mean she should be venerated above God. She was God's mother, in the sense that she bore Jesus, but she was a poor sinful woman like every other person on this Earth and she had other kids after Jesus so she did not remain a virgin all her life as some would have you believe. she was not taken to Heaven as there is no mention of it in the bible and if she was it would be there someplace. She is dead as we all will be unless we are alive when Jesus comes to get His people and Mary will be one that is in that number that is raised at that time. she is not appearing to anyone now or at any time in history and if you read your bible you know that is true. The dead cannot speak and come back to this Earth for anything as the bible says, they do not even praise the Lord, their thoughts have perished, they have no more to do with anything that is done on this Earth.

Mary worship was instituted by a Pope in The 11Th. or 12th. century. No one knows why.
As far as calling her the mother of God, you can say that, she was, Jesus was God.
As to worshiping her, NO. ( the word venerated means worshiped )--You worship Deity only she was not Deity.
Jesus is your mediator between you and God. 1 Tim 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
No intercession from anyone else. No Saints, no Mary, No Joseph, Just Jesus.---No priest either.

Mary was blessed among women. Of any role in the bible I think hers was the best. However, she is still a woman who needed a savior. She is not the mother of GOD. She is the mother of the human Jesus. She had nothing to do with the divinity part. She was a vessel. She was a sinner. The bible speaks of her going to temple and sacrificing turtledoves for her sin. She needed Jesus to save her soul as did anyone else. She knew this. She is not the eternal virgin. She had other children after Jesus.
Remember the story of the wedding where Mary asked Jesus to take care of the running out of wine thing? When she asked him to he said no. Why???? Was he being mean? NO. He was making it abundantly clear that one is not supposed to go to Mary to intercede with Jesus. OH and in those days, if you had something to do with the wedding---you were a relative. So Mary was a relative of the bride---possibly her mom???
I think Mary would be so sad to see many praying to her instead of Jesus---the savior.

What about "enmity" between Mary and the devil (Gen 3:15)? What about "blessed among women" (Lk 1:28)? What about the Ark of the Covenant (Rev 12:1)? These refer to Mary as someone who is not simply another woman.

That is part of the Sacred tree, acknowledge. The secrets of Life and the good and evil knowledge. The veneration of Woman's for the quality of birth, he can give while she is a virgin and pure, can not be equalize.

Because Catholics have that all messed. That doesn't make sense to worship Mary. She was only the mother of God, not God.
**Thanks, BrotherMichael. That's more what I meant, you said it better though!

Her role like that of John the Baptist was preparatory. The scriptures concentrate on the atonement of Jesus Christ; His teachings, His mission, His death and resurrection.
Some people find an identification and a comfort in practices that are secondary in the scriptures. Some will concentrate on the crucifixion and not the resurrection. Just different a emphasis.

She is not "the mother of God" and is not referred to in that manner anywhere in Scripture. She was the physical mother of Jesus, but He existed as God before she was ever born. She had children after Jesus and died as all humans did. We should respect her for what she was, not venerate her as a mediator between us and God or see her with any supernatural powers.

Mary was a young lady who found favor in Gods eyes and was chosen to bear the son of God. She was able to with stand the gossip, ridicule and stand there while her beloved son was crucified. Mary was a mere woman and no one should think of her as anything higher than that.
