My Papillon puppy is 10 mons. old and is a very intelligent little pup. She knows how to take her toys out of her 'toy basket' and bring them to us - but not how to put them back in! I'm sick of picking up after her; is there a way to train her to put the toys away herself?

Yes! This is a fun game to play with any dog. I suggest getting a dog training book if you don't know how to use clicker training or positive/reward reinforcement training.

Basically, you need to make putting the toys away a fun game with a reward. Does she like treats? Does she have a favorite toy?

First, start by having her bring her toys out of her basket and to you. Reward her with high-pitched words like good girl, yes, etc.

After she is done bringing you her toys OUT of the basket, YOU go to her basket and sit there. Get her to bring you a toy, take it from her and put it in the basket, Give her LOTS of praise, treat, favorite toy, etc. Continue to practice this until she has it down 100%. Then, you can name the game- like "pick-up" or "clean-up" or whatever. When she begins to bring a toy to you to put in the basket, use that command so she learns it.

The next thing to teach her is dropping a toy in the basket on her own. There are a couple of ways to teach this. The fundamental is to teach a dog to "release" or "drop" or "let go" of a toy. There are two ways to teach this- either use the command "drop" when she lets go of a toy on her own, OR tempt her to let go of the toy by trading her with a treat or another toy. Use the command when she lets go of one to get the other.

To put the two tricks together, just start playing the first game, then put the basket under her mouth, give her the let go command and reward her like she just won the lottery.

Repeat about 30 times and she should have it down. Don't forget the party reward with treats, high pitched voice praise, tummy rub or toy play.

Have fun!

well put a biscut or dog food in her basket and make her drag the toy in the basket and eat the biscut!!! Or she might be too small and doesnt know what to do so i thing that you should wait a little and then try again with teaching her!! IF this doesnt work then i thing that dogs cant do that!! Ok well have fun

okay. you need to train her to take them out first like saying go get your toy, once she learns that teach her to pick them up by saying clean up or a command of your liking, you need to lead her toy to the basket and teach her to put it in their, it isnt that hard just make shure you have lots and lots of treats!

i tell you ! this is very diffuculy. i made my dog to talk english . it cannot speak sentences but it can tell some words.

you sit with your dog & talk to him/her.

first teach it fetch.then tell it to pick up the toy (use ur hands to pick it up & put in its mouth.) lift it up (with the toy in its mouth)& drop it in the basket
