The word homophobe simply means a dislike of homosexuality and this exactly describes their situation. But it has deeper roots. Some people who are attracted to others of the same sex find that this causes them great anxiety, which they externalise and blame on other people.
In the church, some celibate priests have a homosexual orientation, which they repress, but they condemn homosexuality in other people.
Other innate minority characteristics, such as left-handedness or ginger hair, do not cause comparable anxiety or scapegoating.

Reoly to Mike C: You appear to be trying to make some unfair and unkind association between consensual homosexuality and criminal non-consensual abuse. This is unfair and nonsensical, even though you may FEEL heterosexual. I'm sure there are people out there that FEEL like a pedophile, but they don't act on it so they are NOT pedophiles. Does that make sense?..well does it?.

Reply to Lawrence Louis: Homosexuality is not mentioned at all anywhere in scripture, the bible does however seem to be against buggery generally whether between two men or between a man and a woman.
Phobia covers fear, dislike, repulsion for whatever reason or in this case perhaps unreason or antique superstition and religious belief not founded on the rational.

I personally believe that the term homophobe denotes some level of fear (as in any other phobia) which would not be the case where a person just dislikes something. Those of us who are Christians realize that God denounces Homosexuality, and as a consequence we dislike what God dislikes. Not the person, but the practice is to be abhorred. You do have a choice of PRACTICE, even though you may FEEL homosexual. I'm sure there are people out there that FEEL like a pedophile, but they don't act on it so they are NOT pedophiles. Does that make sense?

inspite of ways you experience about the problem, the time period "homophobe" isn't perfect English. it truly is derived from 'homophobia', it truly is itself a nasty structure, because homo- from gay ability 'similar', as in similar sex. And phobia, for sure, ability worry. So 'homophobia' ability 'worry of similar', it truly is stupid sufficient. Then we chop off the top of it and make it 'phobe', which makes no experience in spite of. I mean, we do not call someone who's terrified of heights an acrophobe. it truly is only crude use of language. besides, the determination of creating use of 'phobia' is a really political decision, because it implies precisely what you've stated...that they are terrified of something. Frankly, that interpretation demonstrates very a lot of lack of recognize-how. surely, there might want to be those who've the characteristics you element out, yet there are quite some more beneficial who've thoroughly different causes for his or her evaluations, yet are labelled "homophobes" too. earlier you attempt to psychoanalyze an entire united states, perchance it would want to pay to talk with the people and learn about their beliefs and their evaluations. perchance it truly is you who's retaining a bias.

Homophobia: : irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals. (Source Webster’s Dictionary)
With that official definition of homophobia defined, it should be obvious why most people who protest homosexuality on religious grounds, and not bigotry, take offensive to being defined as a homophobe. The true definition and popular connotation of the term states that one is against the homosexual and seeks to discriminate against him. As most Christians, who know their theology, will tell you, we hate the sin, not the sinner. I can despise the fact that a relative is an alcoholic, but still love him as a person. In fact I am called, as a Christian, to do so. Just because I have reservations against alcoholism doesn’t make me an enemy of alcoholics. Likewise I, not approving of homosexual behavior, does not imply that I hate homosexuals or fear them. Yet the term homophobe, is truly defined as and is popularly perceived as being prejudicial.
Vocalizing ones disdain for a particular kind of behavior, when articulating that dissent will help a person, isn’t a phobia, and it isn’t bigotry. It is the highest calling for those who love their fellow man. Without such willingness to criticize those who are doing wrong, the whole enterprise of parenting would be an exercise in futility. To criticize with proper conviction is love.

Critics of homosexuality do not fear homosexuality (the usual meaning of 'phobia'); they simply do not believe that it is a right action.
Left-handedness or ginger hair are traits people are born with; homosexual acts are things that people choose to do. People are not born homosexual any more than they are born committing crimes or born smoking cigarettes.
Some people who may have certain tendencies choose to control themselves so that they can live without committing those sins.
Matthew 19:12 For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

Hi there! I don't believe in homosexuality, but I don't understand being called a homophobe at all. I am not scared of them, I just simply disagree with their lifestyles. It's not that I do not like them, I have friends that are gay and they are wonderful people!
I think a true homophobe is one whom shows hatred, anger, and violence towards a homosexual. I don't do any of that, that is why I argue the fact. ;o)

Phobia implies a fear of homosexuals. And I think people who disprove of homosexuality are not scared of homosexuals. The word doesn't seem to fit to me.

Christians hate the sin of homosexuality but love the homosexual sinner. Homophobes hate "gays". Big difference. You should respect the beliefs and differing opinions of others. Not everyone is going to accept your lifestyle.
Celibate priests with a homosexual orientation are not hypocrites. The sin is in the ACT.

The root phob means fear. I dislike homosexuality, but am not afraid of it, so don't consider myself a homophobe. It's an unnatural lust that no good comes from; God calls it an abomination and I'll side with God's Word every time. God bless you. ~Nisa
