My male Siberian Husky has always been an outside dog. However, he became very sick last week. I took him to the vet and she is still waiting on test results to try to determine what exactly is wrong with him, but she wants him to stay indoors temporarily. He is real weak right now so he isn't wandering all over or getting into anything. I have him in my kitchen with a baby gate in the doorway. But I have no idea when and how often to take him outside to use the bathroom. Is it every hour, every 2 hours, or after he eats or drinks?

He has a fenced in yard that he usually lives in with an awning over part of it. I live in Texas and the temp has been around 104. This is just going to be temporarily. And for anyone who just wants to tell me how wrong it is to have a dog, especially a Husky, outside in Texas weather, please save it. I discuses all this with his breeder and his vet when I got him, and they said that as long as I gave him plenty of water, shade and he had breeze blowing over him, then he would be fine. Anyone who has ever seen a Husky shed probably wouldn't be to keen on having one indoors all the time anyways.

Being sick, he will probably need to go out more frequently, but healthy adult dogs can go 8 hours or more without going outside. I take mine out about every 4-6 hours when I'm home. I would suggest taking him out every 4 hours or less if you can. Also, watch for signs he may need to go outside...pacing by the door, crying, etc. If all else fails, lay down some housebreaking pads and see if he'll use those.

Both of those together... every two hours AND immediately after eating or drinking a lot. Don't give her all day out there... limit her time so she does her business and comes back in. Don't cave in to letting her out every time she stands by the door... limit her as best you can or she may have trouble differentiating being an outdoor or an indoor pet.
And besides... why have an outside pet in the first place. They're a member of your family, or should be,... would you lock your kid outside? Bad question... I know most people would like to do that at least part of the time, lol!

Usually within a half hour of eating or drinking he should be taking outside. Once he gets the idea he will go stand or lie by the door. I have always found that if a dog is started outside he will prefer going there then in the house. Your responsibility is to answer his call for the great outdoors!

I don't know, the dog probably doesn't know either. I would just create a schedule. Is it free fed? meaning does it have access to food all day? There are too many varibles not listed to give any solid advice. Is this goiing to be a permanent thing or just until it heals? I would just take him outside every couple of hours I suppose.

To make your dog an inside dog you have to get a metal gate (make sure it's tall enough for him) Put down some newspaper or dog training pads in the gate. Before he's fed and after is when a dog goes.Put some food and water in his cage and a bed or kennel with blankets.

We have a year old puppy, she likes to go out about every 2 hours. But if he is not feeling well I would say every 3 or 4 hours.

Is he able to walk? If so, watch for signs of needing out, pacing, whimpering. Husky are very intelligent, and will normally let you know when. Regardless i would take him out around 5 or 6pm before bed time

Buy some training pads to put by the door until you get a feel for how often he needs to go out. He'll also grow accustomed to pawing at the door when he wants out.

About an hour after he eats and drinks, before you go to bed and when you get up. Hope he feels better.
