If it is front wheel drive it is the cv shafts or joints
If it is rear wheel drive check the ball joints or the tie rod ends

It could be the CV joints. Worn joints will make a rhythmic clicking or cracking noise; when you turn left.
If you do replace your CV joints, you might want to change the entire axle. Since the thing comes fully assembled and you are already there. Unless you got problems from both ends, there is no need to replace both axles
BTW, there is a chance the noise might be a front wheel bearing. These are usually easy to diagnose when the car is on a lift. A rumbling, growling, chirping or cyclic noise of any kind from the vicinity of the wheels is a good indication.

it could be one of many things:
power steering fluid is low and needs topping up.
(this tends to make a noise whichever way you turn the steering wheel though.)
the power steering pump is ****** and needs to be replaced.
the wheel bearing has gone, this is more of a constant whirring sound though.
it is possible to be a steering arm or link arm but the steering would be all over the place and the wear on the tyres, well lets just say your tyres would be F****** in a matter of a month if you keep driving on it.
more than likly i think it is the c.v. boot rubber which has split or torn and has leaked out all of the steering grease and its now whinning when you turn one way.
the c.v. joint could be damaged because of the rubber spliting but if its just starting happening then i think its just a c.v. boot rubber.
turn the steering wheel full lock and feel for a rubber about the size of your hand on the driveshaft, this is called the c.v. boot if its covered in grease and split (be carefull the grease is very differcult to get out of clothes.) theres your problem.

Your vehicle sounds like the idle arm or CV joints are gone.
You should have this taken care of immediately, because the wheel can break at the point of repair and drop the body on to the wheel. Another possibility is that if you are driving at a high rate of speed, overturn the vehicle can be exceptionally serious if not fatal.

old broken motor mounting causing the exhaust breaches pipe to smack the frame or undercarriage. Type "Ford Capri Laser" into your browser and there is a whole club web site you can chat back and forth about your cars.

It's the inner wings turning to Weetabix before your very eyes. What the hell are you doing stuck in one of those pieces of shite for? Wake up, and smell the nineties, at least.
I have two Mercedes, and wouldn't touch another Ford with a ninety-foot pole.

Power steering is going out. Bring it to a mechanic before it goes out all together.
