Well, most people just get a new one, but it's way cheaper to just have someone replace the brushes (which is something you can do yourself, but sometimes they're tricky little bastards and bend every which way when you try to get the new ones in). Replacement brushes are about $15 while a new (rebuilt) alternator can run anywhere from $40 to $100, depending on the car. Add that to $80/hr for a mechanic...ug.
One problem I had a while ago is that a wire kept coming loose from the alternator. You might take a peek at it and check all the connections - that's a really easy fix, just needs a little solder.

enable me grant a guideline to you and say which you could sell the motor vehicle for factors, or what's left of it besides. the motor vehicle is previous and beat, so KBB shouldn't even remember at that component. Pull the motor and any "good" factors out, sell the motor vehicle to a scrap backyard for one hundred dollars or so, then sell the factors off of the motor once you're worrying approximately getting any money. different than that, i might call certainly one of those tow businesses that provides your money to haul away your junk motor vehicle. those tow businesses then take that motor vehicle to the scrap backyard and get money for it, so regardless of way works real for you is the way i might circulate! only submit to in techniques, the words "As is, the place is," do no longer conceal your lower back at the instant, so sell it for factors and you will no longer have something to rigidity approximately. good success!!

$70-100 I believe. Though that was the cost to replace my Tercel and that's not fancy car! So might depend on the car.
