Was the Light Ever Found?

what happened at Ascot 1938, to cause things to go Dark.......

if i remember we found it on the bridge after hours of looking for it
nobody puts a torch down in the dark and turns it off wally

have no idea but will await with interest the answer as this is not to far from where I used to live. I am assuming it might have something to do with racing, and the time would be around the start of WWII.... am I getting close to the answer????
