1CO 13:4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

1CO 13:8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12 Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

Love is a gift of absolute selflessness that can only be described in relation to other things. It's not about getting or having. It is simply about giving without the expectation of something in return. It is "good will."

We can talk about how love is manifested in the world and in relationships, but that will be at least slightly different depending on who does the describing.

We have complete control when deciding to whom we will give this gift and it never hurts us to give it. We have unlimited quantities of it to give.

We frequently think of love as the contributions others make to us in our neediness for them (and love usually does exist there--evidenced by our own satisfaction), but it is the good will they have for us, not the satisfaction, that constitutes love.

Any questions?

I quite abruptly came to a point in my life where I realized that one of the things that I was most confused about was love.

I had never questioned the concept of love that I had been given as a child. I simply accepted what I had been told, sort of the Hollywood romance version of the idea. Love as I had been told was something that you guarded very carefully. Only giving it to those who you felt were worthy of it. The reasons why you should not love someone seemed endless. The reasons why you should were often more selfish than compassionate. Mostly based on what you were getting out of the relationship. The rules were confining and limiting but I had simply never thought to question their authenticity. I was so confused that I did not even realize that there might even be a question that I should be asking, much less a far more logical answer. The result was that I loved stingily like some kind of a miser. My list of reasons why someone just wasn’t worthy was just too long. The many hoops someone had to jump through to be worthy in my version of love was hardly worth the effort for the meager return.

Then my daughter had my first grandson, he came along and helped me to see things in a whole new light. For the first time in my life I had someone that I loved just because I could. This was new to me. Not a single thing to be gained other than the great feeling it gave me to have such a wonderful grandson to love. This made me start to question this idea of love that I had been given as a child. Seemed like an awful lot of reasons not to be doing something that made you feel really good about your life.

I started to look more closely at all of these reasons why some people were supposedly unworthy of loving. I started to realize that it was first necessary to judge someone worthy or unworthy of love. I pondered this idea for quite some time. All of this judgment was a real impediment to my ability to love others. Then suddenly one day it hit me like a ton of bricks. The idea of love I had been given as a child was never love at all, it was only judgment. I had never really loved anyone. I had simply been judging them worthy or unworthy based on a silly set of limitations I had been given by other equally confused people as a child.

The endless reasons to exclude people started to look rather absurd from then on. One by one I saw them for the barriers that they were between me and all those around me. Most of them were no more than the silly fears of insecure and bigoted people that I had adopted. Confused ideas from people too afraid to take a chance to trust the people they met, or too afraid of what others might think. Sadly this is what love means to so many people.

We could use such sayings as "love is a decision" which is true, or "love is never having to say your sorry" which is nonsense. But the truest essence of love is Christ. Look at His life, His death, His Resurrection, if you can find a better definition of true, unadulterated love, I would be interested in hearing it.

Different people have different opinion about love. To really know what love is about is to feel love yourself.

For me, love is about caring towards a person and sharing you life with someone you can really trust and have a good communication with. You just feel good and safe being with that person. Thats love in my understanding.
