I was not going to answer this question until I read Cheyenne's answer.

A Saint (capital "S"), according to the Catholic Church, is a person who has lived and died in God's friendship. There are no 'living' saints.

A Martyr is a person who has died, rather than renounce his or her Faith. Again, there are no living 'martyrs.'

So Saints, according to Catholicism, are the friends of God who are in Heaven with Him.

How to become a Saint/Martyr? That really is up to God. Some Saints prayed for the strength to face martyrdom rather than renounce their Faith. Lead the best life you possibly can, pray a lot, seek spiritual counseling from your priest, and believe.

Good luck.

The word martyr means witness.

Any Christian can be a witness for Christ. Death is optional.

A saint is anyone who manages to wind up in heaven.

The apostles called their friends saints, in order to encourage them.

It's kind of like calling someone a gentleman or a scholar, when you know they're not really, as yet.

A Catholic Saint/Martr is a false teaching by a false Religion and contradicts Scripture.
A True Follower of Christ who has been born again is called a Saint.
A martr is someone who suffered for something, but that could be anything.

All who receive Christ as their savior are considered the Church and are, by Biblical definition, saints.

Countless people have achieved sainthood. To be RECOGNIZED as such, though, requires religio/politico connections. That's the slammer.
