I believe the term "angler" came from early fishing technique in england where a straight pin was bent into an angle to hook fish. Less efficient than a net but a lot more fun on the end of a cane pole.

Angler is a person who fishes with a hook and line. I think it's the shape of the hook that makes fishing person angler. But I think angler is for those are professional. If it's just for fun, I don't think it's appropriate.

I do not know the source of the word, but it can be looked up. I am an angler
and must use different techniques and different baits to trick a fish into biting the hook. So finding different angles that work makes it an appropriate name.
