I am doing two things to help my son with his autism. The first is removing red food dye from his diet completely. It has helped with his behavior issues a little, and it's not something he needs anyway. It's made from petroleum, not something I want in his body, so we got rid of it all. This one is tricky because it's in a lot of foods, even vanilla frosting. The second thing I've done, and it's been the most effective, is using a supplement from Melaleuca. This one basically gave me my child back. After starting on this his vocabulary, retention, memory, behavior, cognitive skills all improved, his sleep disorder(which included night terrors and sleep walking) went away, and his sensory issues are almost gone. It's marketed for ADHD and autoimmune disorders, but it works great for autism, too. I am using it with my neighbor's kid who's almost two (I babysit him and do his therapy with him), he has SID with strong red flags for autism, and after only a week we've seen major improvement in him as well, mostly in cognitive and speech. Other than that, finding a really good sensory diet has really helped my son, figuring out when he can handle sensory stimuli and when he can't,and basing our day around that. Contact me if you'd like info on any of the methods I've mentioned.

A gluten and casien free diet, commonly referred to as a GF/CF diet. Get some books, look it up online, but definitely research before trying! I started my son on it at age 3 and the biggest difference I have seen is that he is far less likely to wander off and run away, which is a huge safety concern for us. Another is he just acts more like a human being and less like a wild animal. Sounds harsh, but it's very true. If he has eaten some things he shouldn't, we usually say he is having a really autistic day, meaning lots of severe symptoms.
Unlike some of the rare success stories of kids being cured, our son has not, but he is definitely better off.
You can also look into vitamins and minerals, since these kids usually have problems with digestion and absorption of nutrients, and are pretty picky.
Please be careful when doing things like chelation(removal of heavy metals). Kids have died doing this incorrectly, so make sure you are seeing a real professional, and not some quack.
There are too many quacks out there trying to make a buck off of parents.
Anyway, I would research everything first. There is a lot of good info out there, in books and online. Just be sure to have an open mind, but don't be so open minded that your brains fall out! :) ( I love that saying.) And stay in touch with other experienced parents who can offer advice and support.
Good luck! I've been there! (I'm still there, I guess.)
One more thing. Don't be totally against meds. I used to be until I realized it was our last option and was worth a shot. He is now on low doses of 2 meds and they have made a very positive difference in his ability to learn and concentrate.

I am currently trying to investigate Zeolites, a compound made up from volcanic ash, that is supposed to remove heavy metals such as mercury from the body...I don't know if it is a bunch of bunk, but I am going to find out next week...I have a wonderful doctor who is 84 years old, and is a pharmacist, and a chemist and has helped many pharmaceutical companies with new meds...I will also ask him about zeolites...I don't know if they are being used on children with autism, but many of the shots they are making kids get have mercury in them, and I am wondering if there might be a connection no one knows about yet...I will let you know...update, actually, I have just found out that they are going to do a study, to see if the zeolites CAN remove the mercury from an autistic childs brain, ...this would truly be a miracle and I pray it works ...

As another poster said, try to reduce the amount of refined sugar and flour you are eating. You may want to cut it out completely for a couple of weeks to help your body recover more quickly. It is not the sugar per se causing the acne, but if you eat a high carbohydrate meal your body produces a lot of insulin, and along with it other hormones are released including testosterone, and that can cause excess sebum production and skin aging which contribute to acne. Just google "sugar and acne" and you can read all about what is happening in your body. So, if you must eat something with a lot of sugar (like soda or cake) or white flour, try to have it with complex carbohydrates like vegetables, fruits, or whole grains because they will help lessen the surge of insulin associated with highly refined carbs. The rest of your body will thank you too! After 4 dermatologists, several medications (including accutane) and daily cleansing, this has been the most effective treatment I have used.

You may need to check your child's diet. My nephew has autism. We have to make sure he has a gluten free diet. Some children with autism react positive and negatively to some foods just like us, but unfortunately their reactions can be a little more severe due to their chemical in balance!! I would talk to a doctor and psychiatrist in regards to your child's diet.

I work with my nephew everyday. I know your struggles and want you to know you are not alone. My thoughts and prayers are with you!!

I have read research on this that includes a high fat, low sugar diet, but I mean some kids are eating spoonfuls of real mayonnaise in the morning, so it sounds gross.
