My weimaraner-so sweet and loving is a now a brutal murderer. Today alone she has caught and I believe shook to death 2 chipmunks, took a little taste and walked away. Is this a normal instinct? I thought these dogs primarily chased birds?

that's fine, maybe those chipmunks should stay out of your yard.

I think that the chipmunks will probably stay out of your yard from now on. My dog has killed a baby rabbit & 2 baby birds before. And she's a little miniature dachshund. Both your dog & my dog are hunting dogs. It's their instinct to kill little animals. Not a whole lot you can do about it. I doubt that she's actually eating them, my dog didn't eat the rabbit or birds that she killed.

if you have a garden consider your self blessed. My Wimeranner and my Lab both loved to chase squirrels and chipmunks. It is part of the natural hunting instinct. if the chipmunks aren't fast enough or smart enough to get away it's natural selection at work

It is a hunting dog. The chipmunks will either get faster of move from your yard.

I had a basenji that caught squirrels

Dogs are natural hunters. It is unfortunate that your dog is doing this, but it is not totally abnormal. The only way to stop negative animal behavior is by making it uncomfortable for them to continue the behavior. "Bad Dog" or walking her on a leash and yelling when she tries to chase a chipmunk may be the only way to stop the behavior.

It is a normal instinct for dogs to hunt and kill small animals like rabbits, squirrels, etc. I know that it can be traumatic to see your dog in this light, but it's the truth.

It's normal instinct.

They were originally bred as all around hunting dogs.

It is not murder to a dog. It's just an instinct. Doggy doesn't actually eat the poor chippies because you feed him.

Oh,GROW UP!!!
(sheeeeeeeeesh.,what a sissy.)
There's NO WAY for an animal to"murder"another animal!!! KILL is the word, dear."Murder" is ONLY for human on human killing.

OF COURSE it's NORMAL!!!
Dogs(ALL DOGS!) are CARNIVORES!! They KILL TO EAT *&* to keep in practice-LOL!
Where's the birds?? YOU are supposed to be hunting w/the dog,not leaving it to struggle on alone!
LMAO!!
They are NOT supposed to"CHASE" birds?? They locate & POINT & flush & retrieve! Didn't you do ANY research? Oh,yeah...silly of me.you got it cuz it was"cute".
