I'd actually like to see most of them removed. The first four are just religious nonsense. Coveting isn't a bad thing. Wanting more than you have is not bad. Only the extreme of trying to get more than you need at the expense of others can be bad. I say, honor your mother and father to the extent that you appreciate what they've done for you. There are appropriate times for lying, but it is generally a bad practice. Killing and stealing are generally bad, except in extreme circumstances.

For the most part, a fixed list of rules really doesn't apply to every situations. We should have a general philosophy instead of a list of commandments. That philosophy would have to be though out and refined for each situation and changed as you and your environment changes. For example, most of the commandments just boil down to the idea that you should treat others around you with respect. That is a generally good thing to do, but I don't need any list to tell me how to do it.

In other words, instead of trying to follow someone else's list, try thinking for yourself. You have to live among other people. Figure out what that means to you. How you treat them will have an effect on how they treat you. You are responsible for your own character.

Thou shalt not act as if thou are intelligent when it is painfully obvious that thou can't string a coherent sentence together without thy speech writers and a teleprompter.
