A good dog for a first time owner is one that is older and trained. Especially at age 64, she may not have the energy that a puppy requires. Check with local shelters and rescues. There are times when a perfect dog for an older person ends up at the shelter or rescue b/c the owner passes and no one else will take the animal. Call around and also be sure that the 64year old woman WANTS a dog, too.

Two of my uncles have mini poodles. They are very cute, outgoing and affectionate. They are also very active. I am not sure that any puppy, let alone a mini poodle, is a good idea for an older woman. If it is an older dog, than I think a poodle is a good choice.

FYI- I have two pugs, and they are very good with my grandparents and inlaws, who are in there 70s. Although pugs are also very active, older pugs are very affectionate, and seem to recognize that "older" individuals are not for fighting and wrestling.

With this being your first dog, I wouldn't get a puppy to start with. You should get one that is already housebroken and make sure it is well tempered.

I know a couple who are in their 80's who have a teacup poodle, which is smaller than a mini, but they love him to death. He's very light and doesn't eat a lot, and is housebroken. They do have very annoying barks though.

Best of luck to you Hon!

this all depends on your attitude, energy, and determination. smaller dogs tend to have more "energy" than larger dogs. are you thinking of getting a puppy or full grown dog? if you plan on getting a puppy, think about professional training (for the dog). either way, a dog is a wonderful companion for anyone young or older alike, just make sure your up for the challenges and expenses.

It would be a good choice if you go to a rescue and adopt an older one.

You also need to have her amend her will in case the dog out lives her. SOmeone will need to care for the dog if she is unable to.

Great little dogs! One drawback...they need frequent grooming. This is something that cant be done at home. Consider how much she can afford to pay for grooming. Check with local groomers. She will need it every 4-6 weeks for the rest of her life.

Poodles are high maintance. The grooming includes pulling the excessive hair from the ears. If this is not done, they have ear infections.
If you have the energy, time, love, and money, then go for it.

a puppy may not be a good choice as this would require a lot of training etc. I would look for a small breed dog from a rescue which has been house trained etc.
