I like swearing. I like to express myself. And I like to express myself freely, easily, spontaneously, responsvely, responsibly and with energy. I don't swear often but, in the moment, or in the heat and energy of the moment, if a swearword seems terribly appropriate then why should I get heavy handed with myself and censor the truth of the moment because of some other person's defective principles?

I want to be allowed to swear freely even with children because I think that swearing in itself need not cause problems or harm. What does need to be contained is bad behaviour of any kind. But many people don't know how to recognise bad behaviour or how to tackle it. It's so easy to challenge swearwords, just because it's an easy target. I use swearwords conctructively and I don't see why I should be inhibited by someone who can't see that I am being constructive.

How would you go about pursuading a puritan to be more relaxed about swearing?
How would you defend swearing?

Being able to communicate and express oneself is important but swearing is not always an effective way to get a point across. Speaking in front of children like they are not there is disrespectful. When I am around kids I like to include them in the conversation and that doesn't mean ranting in front them about something that makes me so angry that I have to swear. To me swearing slips out when an emotion is not under control and really does not add any value to most conversations.

You've got to be between the ages of 19-22. I used to think swearing helped self expression, knowing like you do that most find it offensive. It hurts my ears and stresses me to hear it. Why would you need to talk to a KID in that way? You've got a free spirit & are a natural philosopher, but you have a streak of rebellion, too. If you promise to whisper around me, I'll relax, but I'd rather not hear it, buddy.

Get a job in construction, or be a truck driver ( I do both). But kids don't need to hear it. I draw the line at children, and the environment. I would't dare cuss in front of my Grandmother, but if somebody gets ugly with me on a job, I have discovered you can't try to reason with some people because they don't know how. I just go down to their level and treat them the same way, get it my truck and laugh at their ignorance.

I agree with you, but I also know that a lot of people don't. I don't believe you can convince anybody who's been told in his childhood that swearing is (very) wrong. Just try to surround yourself with people who agree with you or don't care about swearing, that's the only way of being able to use your language the way you want to!

They're only words... and often the only appropriate ones. I don't swear often myself, but I agree with you. It's absurd.
