i see where you're coming from with this...i too felt threatened by a man who doesn't exist.

i think i was about 8 by the time i found out that the bogeyman wasn't real!

now that i'm an adult and am aware of the 'man who doesn't exist' i still don't feel threatened.

after all, the perfect man is nothing to feel threatened about.

lol :o)

Thought or imagination exists, though it doesn't have a physical shape. A long thought processes are responsible behind every discovery (whether small or big).
It depends how much conviction is there in ur thought process. In a different plane one can make surrealistic things to happen simply by strong thought.
These r the positive sides of thought.
Negative thinking r also equally powerful if a person gets obsessed by particular kind of thinking.
e.g., Indians, because of their cultural back ground, generally remain obsessed by some kind of negative thoughts and such thoughts turn into desire and takes a physical shape.

Let's take the example of Viper hypnotising a deer. It really happen in the wild. But can it hypnotise an average normal human being?
No. Because our personality is much much higher compared to that of deer.
Getting afraid of some thing who doesn't exist is of similar kind.
Even if possibility of some such thing occurs in some body's life, a strong mind can shake it off but a week mind gets obsessed by it & some day may be the victim of his / her own thought.

If you worried hard enough about it, you could give yourself a heart attack. If the man exists, or if he's a phantom in your mind, the effect is the same.

I walked by a street preacher (manic, of course) who told me: 'Accept Jesus as your Saviour, or your soul will suffer eternal damnation.'
