In America, dating means going out with a person you are attracted to. Commonly, it means going to a movie, dance, and maybe to a nice restaurant. The goal is to spend some romantic time with the person.
A blind date is a date with someone you don't know. Usually, someone knows you and the other person and thinks you'll be compatible. They then get you to have a date with the other person.

Dating is to know each other's habits, likings and behaviours.

It need not end in sex.
