First, you get a small pan, add water, and get the water boiling. Then add the egg into the water. It will float. Then the water and steam gently cooks the egg to the consistency of being poached. Just watch for the egg white to solidify. I prefer mine soft poached so I like them on the "runny" side. I would say it takes 1 minute.

Add a dash of vinegar to the water to keep the white together.
Keep an eye on the egg as it cooks. Usually 2-3 minutes,
depending on the size of the egg and if it has been in the
refrigerator.

any time you feel like having a poached egg!
Im going to have one now with hot buttered toast and a spread of marmite.
pop a knife into the yolk and if its still runny but the white is solid then its cooked.

Break it into water just off the boil (some vinegar in the water will help prevent it from breaking up) and leave it for four minutes.
If you GENTLY swirl the water and break the egg into the centre that can help keep it together too.

You wanna do it until the white is just turning and solidifying. While you're fannying about with the fish slice or whatever you're using to fish it out, it'll keep cooking. By the time it gets to the toast it'll be perfect.
