You pull the hair out so the inside of the ear canal can dry. If it is left hairy it stays more moist and they get yeast and other ear infections that are painful and can damage their hearing.
It is far easier to have the groomer pull it or trim the hair than to have the dog get chronic ear infections.
This is why poodle are considered high maintainence dogs.
They take a lot of grooming and upkeep.

Bringing the dog to the groomers will save the heart ache of your Mom doing this. Although painful (and not extremely), it is necessary so that ear health is maintained. If the ears get clogged, your talking more issues - chronic ear infections which need medication and daily cleaning, possible narrowing of the ear canal over time, loss of hearing over time. All of which is a more painful process than the occasional pulling of the hair from the ear. Have a vet do it for her or the groomers. It needs to be maintained for the health of the dog.

The hair MUST be pulled! I know it's not pleasant but if it is allowed to clog the ears she will get all kinds of nasty infections in them. Good ear hygene is essencial for good health.

It's not just poodles, it's shih-tzus,bichons,some terriers, and others I can't think of at the moment. When considering getting a dog, you need to look into what care it will need. Not knowing can cause you and the dog alot of problems.

It depends on how heavy the hair growth is. What my vet always sugested is to pull some of it so the air can circulate, but you don't need to totally clear all of it out. If the ears are plugged with too much hair it often causes painful infections, so some should come out.
