Lots of people thinking that when you eat less than your body will become thin or loose fat. Its not right, cos our body is so unique but it is not so hard to understand how actually it work. It work like this, when you eat less you actually telling your body that there is certain shortage of food out there. Body will respond to this by keeping as much as posible fat in the skin. It usually cos when you go on extream diet. You dont give time for the body to except that youre actuallly want to loose fat.
So the best way to loose fat is by by eating small amount of food the breakfast, lunch, dinner, and supper. And between the meal have healthy snack like fruits or vegetables. Eat regularly but in small amount. By telling your body that there will be no food shortage, your body will used all the calories in the body to its optuimum thus not keep them. You will loose fat slowly. For great result exercise regularly to, walking is the simple way of exercising. But remember dont go to the extream!

It's not merely a matter of quantity. It's also quality and timing.
1. You have to avoid foods high in fat, sugar or salt (incuding all fast foods). Eat low on the food pyramid. Focus on whole grains, fruits and veggies.
2. Eat up to 6 small meals/day. This is closer to our evolutionary pattern and means you will never get ravenously hungry and overeat.
3. Conversely, never skip a meal or go a long time without food. Your body will go into starvation mode, meaning it thinks no more food is coming and slows your metabolism to conserve energy. Thus you don't burn off the calories you do eat.
Finally, stay physically active. Cutting back on intake in itself is not enough. 20-30 minutes of vigorous exercise 3-4 times/week boosts your metabolism (the rate at which you burn calories) so that you are burning them off even as you sleep. Exercise is also a mood elevator - so get off your butt and do some brisk walking every day!

You gain weight if you eat less because you metabolism slows down. When your metabolism slows down you body takes longer to digest food and you hold on to more fat because you are kinda starving yourself. You will have better results eating small healthy meals throughout the day and not eating late at night.

If you are eating less and eating the right things, you will lose weight. However if you are fasting or starving yourself, your body goes into "reserve" I guess you would call it... storing fat and hanging on to it to make you survive.
