I know pinyin. I have been studing Chinese (Mandarin) for four and a half years. Almost anyone studing Mandarin will know pinyin. It is also the accepted way to write names from Mainland China in western Newspapers and such.

Only westerners who are serious about learning Chinese would learn 'pinyin', which is what IPA is to foreign languages like English and French.

I was over in China for 6 months and I can say that the mandarin I heard sounded nothing like the way the pinyin was written so generally I would guess no.

"Pinyin" is a simplified way to write Chinese using the western alphabet.
Most westerners who start learning Chinese are familiar with it, because it is one of the first things you learn, long before you start to do characters.
