Smile and say, "Hi how are you doing tonight?"
If she says, "Good" or "Fine" then you just reply with "Yeah, me too - now that I'm talking to you. My name is...And you are?"

First, make sure that you look nice. Obviously, you don't have to be the hottest guy there, but just make sure that you dress well and smell good (but don't douse yourself with cologne). Basically just look neat and like you spent at least a few minutes getting ready. Before you approach any girl, get your drink and make it look like you're doing something - talking to a guy friend, even just watching what's on the TV so it doesn't look like you are there just to pick up girls (even if you are). As you scan the room, notice if any girls make eye contact. If she smiles or holds eye contact for a couple seconds, then she is likely interested. If you're not sure, try smiling at her and see if she responds before you try a conversation. In terms of what to say, just avoid all pick-up lines and try to act as natural as possible (this will probably be easiest after a drink or two). Introduce yourself and offer to buy her a drink. Just make small talk and hope that she will be outgoing enough to carry her end of the conversation. If she's with a friend, as she likely will be, it's important that you don't ignore the friend - chat with her as well, or bring along a wingman who will talk to her. Just be nice and don't make it clear that you're nervous or try too hard to impress her. If she doesn't seem interested, then don't push it and just go back to what you were doing. The most important thing is that you don't give up. You might not find anyone the first night you go out, or the second or third, but you will eventually. And every girl you talk to provides experience, so if it doesn't work out, try to pinpoint what you might have done or said that made her lose interest. So yes, it does take practice. Good luck! Just try not to take it personally if someone turns you down - there are LOTS of reasons that they might that could be completely unrelated to you - and keep looking!

WHen friends are around it is ususally difficult to pierce in. You need to make eye contact first. Let the eyes have a talk between them & watch for response. It takes tie to master thsi art. Once you get a green signal you can make a move humbly.

When someone is alone, you should ask them about their drink, or what they are wearing or doing.
If their in a group, don't try to butt in. It makes you look rude.

say hi. the only catch is that you actually have to be able to carry an intelligent conversation afterward or nothing will work.
