For instance, if you drop something, do you stop to pick it back up, or do you just think "its someone else's problem." I'm just curious to what degree people respect or care about store employees and their work.

I always pick up anything I have knocked over accidentally (and basically anything else I see lying on the floor whether I didn it or not!) It is just a matter or how well you were raised, if your parents didn't raise you to believe that you have a sense of entitlement that puts you above others. No one else was put on earth to be my personal slave.

I worked in retail for a long time. If I change my mind about something, I ususally put it back in the right place. If I see something on the ground (clothing or empty hangers), I pick it up. I'm worst about straightening things on the racks... I can't stand to see a shirt about to fall off the hanger, so I fix it.

Some people are rude and don't think of the employees at all, and I've had to clean up after those people... sometimes the pay just wasn't enough for the nastiness I had to pick up when I worked at a large retail store. I would not do that to someone else.

It depends on the mood I'm in honestly. Now whenever I'm in a clothing store and an item falls off the hanger, I immediately pick it up and hang it back where it belonged. But the grocery store, those stockers need to learn how to stock and maybe the shelves wouldn't be overflowing with merchandise. When I reach for one jar or one box, I don't need ten of them come tumbling down. I refuse to pick them up, my husband usually feels bad so he'll pick them up. My mom is way worse, whatever she drops, she'll kick it up under a shelf and laugh and say, "I don't work here, that's what they get paid to do." I feel bad for the employees but at the same time, I didn't stock the merchandise display sloppy so I'm not going to fix it when I'm not getting paid for it, it's not my job or concern. That's just a problem in most stores I shop in, the items aren't stocked well so I can't feel too sorry for the workers. They should do it right the first time.

I do think of the employees, I know they are doing their best job they can. I also stop a manager where ever I am if an employee went beyond my expectations and let him/her know. Retail is a very hard job, not only do you have to deal with the customers but also with all your superiors. I respect and give all employees the respect and admiration they deserve. If I drop something Iam the first one to admit it and I try to help clean it up. You see I worked in retail for about 10years until I could not handle the rude customers any longer.

The employees are what make a good store! I like to interact with people. Bagging groceries was my first job (in the US.) I also did a lot of clean up after people, and so on. When I shop, like to talk to the checker -- and usually I bag my own groceries (because I like to, and a lot of times, that's how the "set-up" is all over Europe and most of Asia.) Thanks for the reminder. :)

If I drop something, I pick it up. Common courtesy! but most of the time I think "where did the employees go?" They do a disappearing act whenever I need assistance, which is very rare.

I work in a department store, clothes department, and there are SO MANY inconsiderate people around who drive me crazy by, for example, not picking up stuff they knocked down or leaving a huge mess in the fitting rooms, that I am probably the most considerate shopper around ;-)

Having worked in retail and knowing how disgustingly lazy customers can be I always return things to their proper place if I do not want it anymore, I pick up anything that I drop and I make sure to ALWAYS return my shopping cart to the designated areas.

As a manager in retail..people view the service industry workers, as you have percieved there to serve them. We have people leave garbage all over, destroy our bathrooms..all in a days work. When you get older remember this ...and remember those who work day in and out to make YOUR life convienent. (Grocers, Convienience store employees, hairdressers, waitresses/waiters) These are the people who work the hardest without it appreciation.
