gift giving doesn't have to have a major role in a relationship. I've found that at first giving gifts on a consistent basis happens but as the relationship develops further (and the bank balance goes down) you give gifts less frequently and usually on a random event or if there's a special ocassion i.e. anniversary, birthday, etc.

Some people like time, some like words, some life acts, and some like gifts. For people who like acts, gifts are meaningless. For those that like gifts, give gifts. Watch response, and figure it out.
Other than that, generally be reciprocal, and trust your OWN instincts and motivations. If you are a gift giver, give gifts.

...are you talking about tokens of appreciation? I think that modest momentous make things sweet ~ unless you are referring to the professional world. Things are a little different.
