im an amputee, i lost my right leg 24 years ago, i spent six months in hosp, (it was a very bad bike smash) and all my muscles dissapeared as i lay on my bed...
now i have muscles in my left leg that arnie would be proud of. and i dont exercise at all, all i do is walk, i walk with my wife and the 4 dogs, i walk up and down stairs, and i walk to my volvo and back... its taken many years, but i can say its worth the effort.

i am in a similar position to you, i was paraylised 4 months ago after one months illness, i am currently learning to walk and rebuild my leg muscles as the nerves where all destroyed,
currently i have just worked out my own regime, leg lifts while face down, straightening my legs,
ii think maybe you shoulkd ask your doctor about seeing a physio again as they truly are the key
