I'm not sure you really want to know it's pretty spooky stuff. 2nd law of thermodynamics, heat death of the universe, doom doom doom.

Well here you go. Some things happen spontaneously and some require work to happen. As it works out things that happen spontaneously can be used to produce work, energy, things that require work use it up. Here's the scary part, anything that can occur spontaneously and be used to create work generates disorder in the universe, "entropy" is a measure of this disorder, and reduces the usable energy in the universe.

The logical extension of this idea is that eventually every thing in the universe will be at the same temperature, and pressure. There will no way for anything to work and the universe will suffer "heat death".
