You really just have to take the time to walk down the narrow little streets off of Taksim and Sultanvet. The further you get from major attractions for cheeper you get but then again they don't necessarily speak english. I did go to one restaurant a lot called the Cozy Pub on Sultanvet Road. Not really cheep but really good food and the guys there are really cool. They are friends of a friend so I hung out there a lot. I think if you go to the Asian side then you will find it a bit cheeper to.

There is a wonderful restaurant, Haci Abdullah, down Istiklal from Taksim a little way, which is not so expensive and the food is superb.

I forget the cross street, but it's been there for a 100 years. Ask along the way and anyone can point you to it. It sits about 5 or 6 doors down from the main street.

Taksim is a touristical place. Restaurants are more expensive than
suburban places. I suggest you to try anatolian side of Istanbul. You can find nice places with acceptable prices.

But if you are searching for cheap restaurants around Istanbul then you shall try to go to Ortakoy, Nevizade, and Sultanahmet which are quarters near to Taksim area.
