hi, when i decided on getting a dog, my choice was between a doberman, rottveiler or german shephard. I wanted a dog as a house pet and guard dog. After many months of research and serious considerations, my choice eventually came down to a german shephard, probably one of the best choices ive ever made. He has an excellent temprement, is great as a guard dog and pet. He is very loving, extremely loyal and does his guarding job very well. They have a tendency to have one master, that of course is me. If anyone else commands him, he gives them a 'yeah, right, whatever' look and comes and sits by me. My previous dog was a border collie who was amazingly intelligent, very energetic and affectionate, but was on a totally different level to my shephard. Obviously all dogs have different characteristics, but seriously consider your option of getting any large dog. You have to be firm and let them know from the beginning where there place is, otherwise you will have an unruly large dog that will dominate you and others in your household.
As i said before, i made the right choice for me and my dog is a protector and important part of my family.
Look into their characteristics, intelligence, illnesses and breeding before you come to your decision.......good luck.

Please be more specific. Is the German Shepherd the best dog for what?
If you mean for sheep-herding then the answer is 'no'. The Border Collie is the best dog for that purpose.
If you mean is the German Shepherd the best gun-dog then - no again. There are many retrieving breeds much more suitable.
If you mean is the German Shepherd the best dog for ratting then I would probably say the Jack Russell is the best dog.
One of my dogs, who I loved dearly, was a mongrel of such mixed parentage that there was no specific breed recognisable. She was the best dog for curling up on my knee.
My German Shepherd was definitely not the best dog for that purpose but he was the best for making me feel safe and protected.
The German Shepherd Dog appeals to me more than any other breed - I admire its looks, strength, character, loyalty, trainability and so on. I also like Border Collies, Dobermanns and Border Terriers.
However I find questions like yours a bit strange. We have all these wonderful breeds of dog - who cares which one is 'best'.

Depends what you want from your dog and the space available.
A German Shephard is not a suitable dog for flats.

If your looking for a guard dog then yes they are pretty good, but they also need allot of exercise about 5 miles a day, so unless your up to it don't bother getting one. After all it would be nothing but cruel to lock a dog up all day and night with little walks here and there..
If its a pet you want then i recommend a Labb or Golden Retriever or else a smaller dog like a Jack Russel (I have 2and there great fun) or else a Cocker Spaniel, the smaller dogs only need about 3 miles a day. so choose wisely especially if you have young children in the house.

YES!!! I've owned two.My first, Anton passed four years ago at age 13 .My present dog,Lulu is wonderful.Shepherds are very smart and easy to train.Thay generally get on with other animals and people of all ages if they are well socialized at a young age and are very good at protection. They need a lot of exercise, though, and they shed a lot.But still, I think the German shepherd is tops.My Lulu carries the mail and gets the newspaper!

I think so, I have just bought my 4th one, you have to be the right temperament for this breed of dog though, by that I mean you HAVE to train them properly as in the wrong hands they can be horrendous, they have had a bad press in the past but I feel that an awful lot of aggression surrounding them is down to poor training, they need firm handling and plenty of things to do to keep them busy, plenty of socialisation early on, but not too much exercise in the first 12 mths (as with all large breeds), don't let them take the p**s out of you, they appreciate their owners to show leadership, if you let them lead you...........WATCH OUT!!
But yes I believe them to be the best breed of dog.

it depends on the dog you want. German Shepherds are very loyal dogs. They usually respond to one person. My GSD is very attached to me and hes only 5 months old. Its alot of work taking care of them
If your not sure on what kind of dog you want you might look up some breeds at the akc website..they give some detail on the dogs temperment and such

Hell no
I know people say their are no bad dogs only bad owners but nearly every bad experience I have had with dogs involved a GSD. I have two dogs a Westie and a Beagle and I would get one more if my wife would let me but I have lost that battle but I think one day I will just turn up with a wee puppy they always melt her heart.

It's a nice dog, all down to personal choice really. The sad thing is that they only live for about 10 years.

Everyone will tell you their breed is the best dog. The best dog is the one that best suits you - your lifestyle, energy level, knowledge of dogs and training, etc.
