His dad is bi-polar and adhd as are all 3 of his sons. I have never dealt with mental illness in a child before. I ask for your prayers if you pray and your advise if you have some! love, cindy

I have to agree somewhat with virginia o, as to the drugging of children. I would Definately get a second and third opinion from doctors who were unaware of this doctor's diagnosis. It's possible your son may need to be on medication, but it should be done in a controlled setting where his reactions can be monitored.

The usual handling of bipolar disorder is to treat only after symptoms begin to occur, unless both parents are diagnosed bipolars. At 3 or 4 years of age, are those wild mood swings just normal child trying to find his place and independence?

You definately need to find a support group, a great doctor and therapist. Get him outside as much as possible. Living with mental illness or with a mentally ill person doesn't have to mean living at the edge of a cliff.

Read up on the meds and disorder as much as you can. You, the parent, have to be the one to make the okay's on treatments. Informed decisions are the key.

I have an autistic son -- 21 -- medication, unfortunately, is not an exact science. It takes alot of tweeking and patience. My ex was adhd and took a great of pleasure in hurting me. --so, you're doing the right thing, but make sure you keep your son in counseling, along with your self. You'll need it. Adhd and Bi-polar seem to be genetic and from what I was told 15 yrs ago, each subsequent child will probaly be worse. I chose to have an abortion. 1 was quite enough. My prayers are with you.

If hes more hyper than before, then the meds cant be working. I know im only 16, but i have ADD, and i was also given the wrong medication for it. It made me worse, and i used to take it out on my mum. The stopped giving me the meds, and i became less agressive and hyper. I think that if hes hyper, their definetly not working. Sometimes doctors can prescribe the wrong meds, like they did with me.
But if you have him on this new stuff now, then maybe that will work. Good luck, and if it still doesnt work, then its the wrong stuff. Each kid is different.

I had to finally break down and put my 5 years old (almost 4 then) on Ritalin. She is finally doing well on 30mg and 1/2 of a .1 miligram of Clonidine for sleeping. Things get better, it just takes time to get the right meds for a child. My daughter's doctor was so great she worked with us for 8 months before we finally had to put her on something. I'll keep you in my prayers.

I suggest some chiropractic adjustments. Many children have irregular pressures on the spine due to childbirth that never get corrected. Behavioral problems are a result. I have some serious concerns about all these meds we are giving children these days. We continue to pump our kids full of meds, vaccines, and other toxins from the time they are born. Take a step back and go back to basics. Good organic food, clean water, and lots of love. Good luck.

If you can, get a second opinion. Those are dangerous drugs and the boy is quite young. It might take some time for the drugs to properly work, but I would still get a second opinion. You already have my prayers, Cindy.

Find a self help group, you need one.
Your child needs medication, and he will be ok. Also you could try meeting therapists, it is now said that soem foods aggrvate the situation.
Read up as uch as you can on it, it will help you understand and cope.

Yes I know how you feel, I am a mother, so its hard when things are not going well with kids. Take care

I am an old registered nurse and I consider the doctor who prescibed this drug and yourself as child abusers of the worst sort.------,there is no such thing as adhd. you have a high spirited, high maintenance child and YOU CAN ONLY CHANGE HIS BEHAVIOUR BUT NOT HIS HIS PERSONALITY WITH DRUGS it's obscene!!!!!
you are probably t he cause of his ructions so the only way to alter his behaviour is to start again with him, take him out somewhere and just be mum. Love him and treat him with respect --it may take a while but the alternative is a drug addict at school age
Drugging children to modify their behaviour is like something out of Nazi germany or what they would do in Communist russia to re-educate. Do you really love this child????
. Once upon a time children used to be full of beans now, sadly, if they are full of beans many of them are also full of toxic addictive substances
