I tried out last week at a soup van - there were about 25 volunteers including myself, and about 500 homeless people. I don't think I'll go back, I just felt lost within the sea of people. I had the feeling that it would have made no difference if I had been there or not. Sure, it sounds selfish of me, but the reason why I want to do volunteer work is to feel useful. Also, I'm not a very sociable person, so it was all a bit overwhelming. My family thought I might not be able to handle all the homeless people, but it turned out that I couldn't handle all the volunteers!! I need to find something else that makes me feel useful and needed, without making me want to run and hide. Any suggestions??

You could volunteer for any number of church activities, for the Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity or a local hospital just to name a few. Contact any children's services near you to see if they need an extra hand.

How very thoughtful of you! Good luck! :)

I volunteered at a food drive it was very quite and the work we did made a difference.

I also volunteered at the hospital which was alot of fun. The patients really appreciated us being there..
