The tea party was a feature of great houses in the Victorian and Edwardian ages in the United Kingdom and the Gilded Age in the United States.

Back before the 1800's they used the word "party" for a gathering of several people, like, "Look, there goes the party of five,"

Since they drank tea all the time they started saying stuff like, "Look, the party of five is having tea."

Then, instead of saying all those words they just began saying, look, the party is having tea."

Then, they used another shortcut and said, "Look, a tea party."
