It is not a dream.
It happens as I am falling asleep, or just after I fall asleep. But when it happens it wakens me fully so I am completely awake with my eyes open. It is such a feeling of unexplainable terror and dread that words can't describe.
It is really a presence in my room. I can't see or hear it. I can only feel it. It paralyzes me and I can't move or scream. My voice and lips are paralyzed too so I can't talk. Whatever position my head and neck is in when it comes on me, that is the way it stays because I am completely paralyzed. So I can't look around. The only sound I can make is a guttural sound deep in my throat. All I can do is pray in Jesus name in my mind, for the thing to leave. I say it over and over again in my mind and with what little vocal capabilities I have, until the presence fades away and is gone.
After which I get up and turn the light on in my room. It only happens when I turn out my lights. But I can't sleep with them on! Help me!!!

it's probably a haunting in your house. after a while, it could be harmful not only to your mind, but your body as well. to overcome these theings you HAVE to have a comfortable mind, free of thoughts and negativity. After all, the body mimicks the mind quite often and ultimately these things feed off of us. give it a boost. make it go away.

I'm not 100% sure based on your description but it sounds like you're describing night terrors. Some people get them for a period of time in their lives then never again, hopefully that's the case with you. Have a look at http://www.nightterrors.org - there's a lot of info there.

If the problem is just the darkness, try getting an in-line light switch that you can hold in your hand while you're falling asleep. You may find you don't have the fear reaction knowing that you can flick your thumb anytime to put the light back on. If that works you can gradually move the switch further away in future.

Your symptoms also sound a bit like hypnagogic/hypnopompic sleep paralysis, so that might be worth googling too.

One thing this is NOT is satanic possession or a haunted house or any of that crap. Its a somewhat common occurence with a set of reliable diagnostic criteria thats fairly well understood in terms of brain function. And there are various things you can do, including sleeping strategies and medications, to solve this.

This may sound crazy, but in the south they call what you are describing as the "witch on your back" But what is really happening is that your waking up during R.E.M sleep. It's really nothing to worry about although it can be a little scary. Also I know someone who had this problem and his Doctor said when you wake up during R.E.M. sleep it's often due to being under a lot of stress. If this is happening to you more then once a month you really should see your doctor.

Sleep with something metallic, like your key or a nail or even a metal jewellery (gold chain or ring).
