Oh boy.

Go for a used Volvo S60. It's possible to get one for around..eh, 17k with a decent amount of mileage on it.

And when you to to resell it, it'll sell great because it's a damn Volvo!

VW wise...Used GTI? R32? New Rabbit?

Toyotas are always a good choice. Saturns are good cars too. I bought my daughter a Hyandaui because of the warranty and gas mileage. They are rated fairly safe also. Can't think which one, not the accent but the other small coupe.

Subaru Forester - low maintenance, good gas mileage. Mine has 110,000 miles on it (2002) and I have never had any major repairs done on it. Good luck in your search.
