Read the preface of the book - and you will note it is a work of fiction.
Then read the book - remembering it is a work of fiction (as noted in the authors preface), and a tad odd in places.
As a work of fiction, I was ok with the movie, dull in places, but some cool (to me) graphics/scenes in others, but agree with a prior answer, as I felt the book was the better of the two and is helpful to understand the "missing" parts that would have helped bridge a few of the large gaps in the movie version.
My view of what the book is about:
Secret (and fanatical) religious sects that, conspire to hide and prevent the discovery of the mystery and codes (and people) hidden in Da Vinci's works such as, The Mona Lisa, Madonna of the Rocks and The Last Supper (is it a women in the painting? is a big one). It is also has some rearrangment of medieval history.

Just remember it is a work of fiction, and because I found several items to be flat out incorrect (on facts that were just to damn easy to find - as to be carelessness on the authors part) I was somewhat disappointed, and would never read it a 2nd time (which for me is a real negative comment).

I never saw the movie or read the book, but I heard some bad things about the movie not staying true to the material.

Why don't you read the book.It was better than the movie anyways, and the main character wasn't supposed to look like tom hanks. that way you can kill 2 birds with 1 stone, find out what its all about, and have a book read for book reports in English class

Someone asked this earlier

all you need to know is that The DaVinci Code and The Bible have this in common: They are both appalingly bad works of fiction that have sold millions of copies.

Its a blasphemous story about Christ and says that He got married to mary madalene and have a child name Sarah. The story goes into finding the bloodline which is considered as one of the greatest coverup ever. Go and read the book, i can only type so much

It seems that Divinci painted the last supper and spelled out his name with the way the disciples and Christ was arranged in the painting.Well somebody in France tried to claim that Jesus and Mary Magdalene married and that he was a descendant of the false union, and that they all have been secretly living in France, and the Catholic church didn't want this to leak out to the world, because it would disprove the Bible.PEACE!!

Sorry didn't go to see it myself, Heard it was a good story, but just a story never the less.
The Bible is the only book inspired by God and I believe it refutes a lot of what The Movie was trying to put across. And as the director Ron Howard said its just apiece of cinema entertainment.

Well young man if you need your mommy to take you to the movie theatre because you are too young to take yourself to the movie theatre it makes sense why you write such juvenile comments to Christians. I wish you well on your question to enlightenment.
