I'm a Christian and it bothers me too when this happens. My view, you are already educated on this whole issue between two things, 1.) Christians who bombard you with this and 2.) In order to disagree with something, you must know what it is about.
Thus, the reason why people do this, is simply because they are too uneducated to give any other reason. It is also because they refuse to want to see where you come from, probably out of fear of defeat and quoting scripture makes them feel smarter.
Now remember, I am a Christian. In fact, I attend a Bible college, studying youth ministry, and get educated on every aspect of the Bible, but I refuse to shove that down your throat, simply because I know it is a turn off. Of course I hope to see you convert to Christianity, but there are ways to do things, and one of force and ignorance is not the way.

I will give a rational answer without agreeing with you. It really is possible, lol!
IMHO, Christians wanna give you the answers to your questions regarding Christianity. Since scripture is so eloquent, sometimes it speaks better than a person can. They don't wanna give you an opinion that might contradict official Christian doctrine, for fear of 1) disservicing you, and 2) misrepresenting Christianity. When they quote, it's actually an act of humility. They are not the authority, but they will point you to the authority. They're trying to answer your questions in the best way they can. Capisce?
If asked on something, I will give an answer in my own words, and also give references. However, my own words aren't the authority, it's the scriptural references that are the authority.
Pretend you ask an attorney's secretary about the law. S/he might quote from law books, just in case s/he words it wrong. That way you have the correct information straight from the source.
Capisce? They're just trying to give the best answer, that's all.

For Christians, the Bible has authority. True, some Christians, out of ignorance, assume that if it has authority for them it must have universal authority. I'm just curious, in speaking of matters of faith, to what would give credence? Personal experience? I get just as frustrated when some people want to argue against religion using only science as the measure, and just for the record, think it's stupid to try to make faith a basis for science. However, just because your not a person of faith, doesn't mean the Bible is meaningless. It has meaning, even if only from a literary standpoint.

GOOD QUESTION! I am not Christiam, and I believe many true hearted Christians have been mislead in many ways. It really depends on their shepherd... have you ever seen a rebellious sheep? lol...seldom. So like good little sheep they follow the masses as they are herded by their little bo peep.
If a Christian devotee were to question and doubt, and if the community are unable to answer, two reactions are given: the soft way - "Just have faith brother/sister", or the harsh way - "You will burn in hell for your blasphemy and doubt." ( from personal experience... i usedto attend church for a few years )
Because many a christian have been intellectually suppressed and emotionally oppressed, they are afraid to venture into other possibilities... I find that strange because if God can "create" a brain of intellect and wisdom, why would he ( or his representatives ) work so hard to suppress it?
So... because of that, they will not use references to any other source but the bible, even with logic, if it challenges the "norm" many will shrink from it fearing brimstone and fire.... but if their Shepherd TELLS them, then you will see how quickly the opinion changes from anti to Pro.
and THAT is the reason why they will use ONLY scruptures and passages to minister to anyone, even atheists and unbelievers. hehe

Christian here and I believe you are right on that one, because unless you have God in your life even if you picked up the Bible and began reading it, it would be meaningless to you....you would not understand what is written.
Let's put it this way, when He does come back, well...I guess then you will understand the Truth. I will pray for you.
OH...how I long for God to move over the atheists of the World and causing everyone of you to fall on your faces and ask for forgiveness.

Why do atheists post questions like this to Christians when you already have chosen to go to hell and noone will change it. Are you predudice against all religions or just Christians? I'm sure other religions do the same out of their book of doctrine. They tell you Jesus loves you because they are concerned for your soul in eternity after your dead. Just because you believe there is no God doesn't make it fact and there is more proof that there is than you can prove there isn't. I would rahter believe there is and then die and there not be then deny God and persecute his followers and then die and then find out there is. Which is using better wisdom. You need to rethink things over my friend.

Because the Bible is God's word and preserved for many many years for us to read in today's language. So when you debate or even just talk to a christian the Bible does come up and that is because it is their food for today So don't be offended when a christian sites the Bible to ya recite what ever you want back especially if you can find any book that has been around as long and a book that you read everyday because it shows you alot about you and others

Not everyone realizes that simply because *they* put stock in something, that doesn't mean everyone else does. We're not all starting at the same reference point of absolute truth, and for many--not just Christians--this is difficult to fathom.
It all comes down to belief. If someone doesn't believe the facts you're using to back up your statements, showing them these facts aren't going to do any good.

WHOA!!!!!!! DUDE!!!
Your post is about to be flooded by a torrent of "BIBLICAL BABBLE" of Biblical Proportions!!!
Don't you know that "Biblical Babble" can prove ANYTHING and EVERYTHING without any proof at all???
As a matter of fact the "Religious Dogmatic Ones" can prove beyond the Shadow of the Holy Ghost that you don't even exist!!
So, be very careful my friend before you go "poof" just like all the Scientific Knowledge in the world (unless of course that Scientific Knowledge can be misconstrued to "prove" their Biblical Babble LOL).
Peace my Friend ;-)

Why not? After all Christians believe the scripture is the devine word of God and therefore believe such words would have the same benefit for you as it does for them They believe that these words carry meaning of love and what many of them are trying to do is share that love with you. It is not there fault that you have chosen to reject what they believe is a great thing of love - a gift that they believe that their creator has given to mankind to help humanity find inner peace and love. All a true christian can do is read the obvious hate and anger that persists and is inside you that becomes obvious from your statements and hopes that within this book, this Bible, that the words of their lord will do unto you what it has done for that particular Christian. When a Christian is citing you verse they are trying to show you love and compasion as best they can and you simply return to them hatred and spite. They know that in the words of their God they have done possibly the best they can as fellow human beings to help you in your personal plight of misery.
