We do not know for sure if they do. Only one or two sources have accused them of it and the soft drink giants have denied the allegations outright. So who do we beleive?
A direct answer to your question would be -- probably as preservatives. But I am not sure
I just dont understand what all the fuss is about. Why are the soft drinks giants being singled out for persecution?
After all what could be the per capita consumption of soft drinks in a country like India? not more than a few milliliters/day, I am sure
1.We do not have any legislation or rules regarding the quantity of toxins or ingredients that can show up in soft drink.
2.We do not hear about similar tests by the same agencies being carried out on our 'desi' soft drinks. so we are blissfully unaware of what they contain.
3. All the ruckus would have made more sense if the govt. was strict in enforcing strict norms against adulteration of all food and drinks. I hope people have an idea of the huge amount of toxins going into their systems when they consume food made with stuff bought in the market and more so when they eat out-- and I am not talking only about wayside eateries and dhabas
.So should we not concentrate on the adulteration of foodstuff that is consumed by a majority of the population rather than make scapegoats of multinationals and scare away potential investors in our country

Are you refering to the recent India Centre for Science and Environment report that states many soft drinks contain greater than the maximum safe levels of certain pesticdes?
If so, it is believed that the drinks are being made from contaminated ground water and the chemicals are not a deliberate addition.

I am not sure of the geographical extent of these contaminations, but seems to vary across India

Only they, or someone working for them could tell you the real reason, I wonder if it had anything to do with the law suit filed against Pepsi back in the 70,s. A woman got real sick, she drank pepsi that was infected with tiny flies and eggs, yes, it is true from what I heard on the news. I think you should bring this up to the news and or Primetime, I bet every one of them drink Pepsi now and then. That is where you will find your answer. Yuk!!!

I don't know for sure, but it must have something to do with making a profit. That's the only purpose of these multinational corporations.
