You don't, and that's damn scary. People who are TRULY insane do not know it. I hope you never have to feel what those people feel because I'm sure it is pure, utter, and complete hell.

There are many and varied symptoms, so that an entire book is put out every few years by the American Psychiatric Association called the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders or DSM for short. Inside you'll find every type of mental disorder along with a list of symptoms.

Contrary to many other answers here it is perfectly within one's ability to realize you're mentally ill without knowing what to do about it or being incapable or unwilling to act on that knowledge even if you freely admit it. Though for some people admitting they have a problem is half the battle.

I myself have several deep issues I have been struggling with my entire life. Mental health requires great effort toward self-knowledge and the ability to seek out help, either from a doctor, a friend, a book, or even the Internet.

People who truly are insane dont wonder about it...and usually when others tell them there are problems, the don't have a clue what is being said to them and usually think YOU"RE the crazy one...if you THINK you are insane, chances are, you're not..but if many many people are telling you you have problems, you should go to a good phsyciatrist and start talking and seeing if it is you truly, or them.

the problem with "insane" people is that they think they are sane. . .the problem with "sane" people is that they are inevitably insane. Everybody is crazy in their own unique ways. Identify where and why you are crazy and just be less crazy in other aspects of your life to balance it out.

first, you should go to a therapist and he/she can probably tell you what your problems have. then, if you ARE insane, to a minor degree, the therapist will probably give you some kind of pills; and if you're totally crazy, you'll probably be sent out to a mental institute.
