Really, do you really need to jump in on every question and say we are stupid, sheep, fools, or idiots (to quote several responses) just because you choose not to believe?
Our belief (in whichever deity/deities we believe in) is just as strong as your non-belief.If I ask the difference between God and Allah and you respond "There is no difference because there is no god", do you really think I am going to say "Oh my gosh, (s)he's right! How could I have been so foolish?" just because you called us "brain dead Muppets"?(Actual quote from one answer, by the way.)
Why don't you go onto the art questions and say "There was no Impressionist School, you arty-farty posers!"?Why don't you mock goths in the fashion questions? Why not waste your time laughing at Dada-ists, claiming Dada is not art, it is anti-Art?Do you have nothing better to do?
Or more to the point, why can't you accept and respect other people's beliefs instead of forcing your beliefs on us, and mocking our beliefs?

CJunk – many laws are not based on religion – abortion, pornography, places of business open on Saturdays or Sundays (depending on the belief), the right to sue… You can’t blame religions for all these laws, only the law makers. If religions created all the laws, why is it not illegal to have an extra-marital affair? Besides, I never said I was a Christian.

J T – what makes you think I’m a thumper? Where in my question did I “thump”? I don’t care what Bush Jr or Sr said – it has nothing to do with my question.

Spookshow Baby – you are right, I was generalising. I apologise.

The Makeout Hobo – yes Dada IS anit-art, that’s what it was created to be.

DuckPhup - just wait, I’ll be getting back to you.

Nikki – seriously, that is a direct quote from an atheist’s answer to a religious question.

ginko202- actually, I meant the difference between the Christian “God” and the Islamic “Allah.” But I was only using it as an illustration anyway.

hop0409 – no, I have only found abusive answers from atheists. And no, I have never found an answer from a theist saying “There is a God/Jesus/Allah/Bhudda/etc, you stupid deluded sheep.” Yes I do accept there are “religious zealots” as you say – do you accept there are anti-religious zealots? But yes, you are right, and to you (as I did to Spookshow Baby) I apologise for generalising.

Scott M – yes, it is an open board, but it is not a forum for open abuse. I do respect your beliefs, and I never said you were going to hell, or called you racist. And if your answers are rational, well thought out and pertinent to the question then I certainly welcome them. Consider my example; if your response was “I am an atheist, so to me there is no difference,” then I would have no problem. But if you finished with slagging me for my belief (eg “brain-dead Muppet”) then I do have a problem. Also – just because we have religious beliefs does not mean we “supposedly believe the same thing.” Christians don’t believe the same thing as Hinduists; Bhuddists don’t believe the same thing as those who follow Mahikari.

2006-08-18 22:19:31 · update #3

GrimReaper1546 – yes, they do. I have seen footage with a Rabbi preaching in the open that Christians claim that God raped Mary. Bhuddists have had missionaries as well. And I didn’t ask why atheists attack Christians and Muslims, I asked why answer religious questions by attacking those who believe in whatever religion they believe in.

Sabrina2004 – the worst thing about your response is no doubt you are right. I just wish that people would only answer in relation to the question, not the asker’s belief(s).

wilf69 – I agree – many theists are just as bad. But I hope that they would stop before calling someone a “braind-dead Muppet.”

2006-08-18 22:20:57 · update #4

brainyandy - why attack religion because of wars? World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the VietNam war all had nothing to do with religion, only politics. Apart from this, the rest of your answer I found to be intelligent, but would you agree that a rational atheistic response is better than "Wake up, you gullible loser!! There is no god so stop being such a secularist deluded sheep!!!" That is my complaint.

2006-08-18 22:26:24 · update #5

Imrational - thank you for your film. Please believe me in saying that as a theist (and an Aussie) I agree with a lot of what you said - not all, but a lot. However, it does not address my question - while being thoroughly intelligent and completely non-offensive, it did not explain why some atheists don't argue intelligently, merely resorting to abuse.
Keep your eye out for my future questions - one may ask something very similar to what your film addressed, and I would welcome it as an answer.

2006-08-20 19:21:08 · update #6

Duckphup - You are a perfect example of my complaint. You have gone waaay of topic, and instead resorted to abuse such as: claiming that as I theist I have not “learned how to THINK properly”, “The fact that Christians assert and promote such ridiculous beliefs is a clear indication that they CAN'T (or WON'T) think properly,.”, open mockery of traditions you do not wish to understand, reduce the origins of some of the world’s greatest religions to “myths, superstitions, fairy tales and fantastical delusions of a tribe of ignorant Bronze Age fishermen and wandering goat herders,” that Christianity “is essentially a criminal business enterprise”, “Christians are generally too dense”, amongst others.

2006-08-20 19:45:44 · update #7

It is also interesting that you talk of the origins of the bible and the history of the early church without actually having any evidence of serious study – possibly reciting what someone wanted you to believe; in fact I found in your answer a great amount of readily- formulated phrases (i.e. “Bronze Age myths”, “ritual cannibalism”, “Abrahamic death cults of desert monotheism”, “dogmatic slogans, and the myths, superstitions, fairy tales and fantastical delusions”, “glaring misconceptions about science and nature” – pseudo intelligent phrases designed to sound clever, while ridiculing anyone who does believe.
You came so close to answering intelligently and correctly on topic – but you went far off topic and were abusive to anyone who doesn’t share your beliefs. Come back when you can argue while respecting others’ beliefs.

My reply to this, as a secular atheist who does not knock all Christians is this....
Those who nay-say are as idiotic as those who proselytise in any religion. I was brought up a Catholic and after many years studying the bible found that very few professed Christians followed it. Then I read the Qu'ran, and found the same. Who's to say you're right or wrong? Who can prove either way. I have made my decision as regards the existance of God or not and I also accept I may be wrong. But in all religions the fundamental essence is that of accceptance and forgiveness; the attempt to create a philosophy whereby we can all live in peace. When people say to me that I am going to hell simply because I don't believe regardless of the good things that I do, what am I to think? The destruction of Iraq in the name of Bush's God? Good grief, the problem with the world at the moment is that we think we are more intelligent, humane, and together than we are. And that's when **** happens. Two, old and hackneyed quotes: 1) "Just when you think you've got it together, it falls apart" and 2) The only thing that history teaches us is that history teaches us nothing"!

Ok, I understand where you coming from. But their is also a lot of you're gonna go to hell going on. I would think that's not the friendliest thing to say for a christian. What about "read the bible" Doesn't that assume I never did or even worse I'm not literate. An other one I find very disrespectful is when an atheist posts a question and they get the " I will pray for you" answer. Might as well put **** you on there. And I have to say I read "are you stupid god does exist "before. So that goes both ways. Some of the answers you'll get from Christians will prove my point.

Last time I checked this was an open board. I might as well ask you guys why you bother coming here to ask or answer questions since you all supposedly believe the same thing.

There is a lot of misinformation and disinformation about atheists that are held by theists. I'm here primarily to speak up and dispel those myths. I'm also here to clear up the (often deliberate) misunderstanding many theists have of science and religious faiths not their own.

As for asking us to respect your beliefs, when you start practicing what you preach then I'll go along. I don't particularly like being told by someone that I'm going to hell or I'm a racist or a violent fruit bat because I don't believe in the things they do.

First of all, why do you lump all atheists together? Have you never received a rational response from someone who claims to be an atheist? Or is it that you refuse to believe that any answer from someone who doesn't share your beliefs is reasonable? How do you know that atheists don't go to the art questions and say "There was no Impressionist School...."? Are atheists the only ones who try to force their beliefs on others and mock people for not believing in their religion? Or is it possible that there are also religious zealots that try to force their beliefs on people? I understand that you have had some rude answers, but perhaps you need to amend your answer to not include a whole group of people because of the insensitivity of a few.

Allah and YHWH are the same god --He is the father of Abram-ham --Ismael was his first son and Isaac his second --Now the whole family is at war --So sarah said have haggar have your baby--The god let sarah have a baby --the sarah said to haggar --Get though **** out of my house and BOOM ---WAR--- Then 9-11 -- Then deny involvement --It was your god -not mine ---AND that sounds like a true god 0--- So most atheist will skip explaining that part and just go straight to their is no god comment -- there are better things to do but some of the atheist may be looking for the warning signs of the next Jim Jones or David Koresh or even a Benladen---The next 9-11 might be a 18-22 or 27-33--It can get worse --And that is a forte of religion !!!

I have the answer to your question and it's soooo good that it will amaze you all...

The reason why Atheists choose to bash on religious people (from what I see, you could be some branch of Christianity) is because there is a passage in the Bible specifically calling out to all Christians to spread their beliefs... and us Atheists are tired of it.

How do I know this? Because I'm an ex-Evangelistic Christian

You never see Jews going on about their religion... Why? Because they don't go out preaching it's not in their religious book....

The only religions that do preach are Christianity and Islam in all their forms... so when you stop preaching, we'll stop bashing you

I like the way that you have put this question and I can understand your annoyance at some of the crude answers you have received to questions in the past. I am also aware that it would be impossible to convert people such as yourself back to normality. However, like 'DuckPhup' I think it is a duty to protect people from the dangers of Christianity and for that matter, all other types of religion.

When you consider the number of wars that have been fought for religious purposes, it's hardly surprising that there are people out there doing there best to steer people away from the (so called) path of righteousness.

Christians can start by not allowing their views to become our laws

EDIT:
1) Christians laws are made to sound 'secular'. But I and many other atheist know they are still there.
2) I never claimed you where a christian. You said in the first line "Really, do you really need to jump in on every question and say WE are stupid, sheep, fools, or idiots". You used a general word 'WE', which I took to be interpreted as referring to a common religion,I presumed christianity, because you didnt state your religion. Now I am to be aware that you are Not???
3) I didnt claim christians make ALL the laws. Through time and influence, we may be able to get rid of some of the other Non Reasonable laws that christians and other religious folks want there. Common laws YES, 'secular' sounding religious views turned into laws 'NO'.
LESS power in the laws where as christians would like the laws to have more power over us.

EDIT2:
Also please note. I dont say "You fool", "idiot","Stupid" and so on. Not that i never do call people these names. I just might not say it to people all that often. I must admit, some people tempt me alot to speak that way. I often try to refrain from issuing the insults.

OK dude, this is how it goes, if you dont believe in God then you dont believe in the Devil either, (yin/yang).
Do you know how many people with nothing better to do? I know alot of them from all makes of life.
Religion is like a puzzle, the complete picture on the box, inside alot of different colored and sized pieces which are all different walks of life. without the stupid you couldnt appreciate the intelligent. However each piece of the puzzle is important to the picture otherwise man is incomplete

I think it's kinda mutual here. are you telling me that the theists here don't critisize the athiests in the same matter? Face it, that's what people do here.

and don't you dare to talk about Dadaism that way!
