I don't think it's militant, although we tend to get painted that way. The term is accurate--a-theist: Not theistic. No belief in a god or divine being.

I f you prefer, though, you could refer to yourself as a secular humanist. That covers the same bases.

How is "atheist" militant? It describes what it is perfectly - A 'theist' is someone who believes in a god or gods. An 'atheist' is someone who does not believe in a god or gods. It's not a militant term, just a description of what an atheist actually is - a person who does not believe in a god or gods.

And yes I am an atheist. Not a "Bright", not a "humanist", an atheist. Pure and simple. :o)

That's the reason the silly and meaningless word "agnostic" was invented. Agnostics are atheists who don't want to upset people.

The word atheist is not militant, is means without a belief in a Supreme Being, or "God(s)".

Thumpers misinterpret it to mean all kinds of things it does not mean.

We are all atheists about some God or another. Everyone has decided to disbelieve in some gods, and believe in one or several others. Very few people, for instance, still believe in Isis, or Sekhmet, so most people are atheistic about those goddesses. Some of us just take it one God further and prefer to believe in none at all. That is slogan, from the celebrated thinker Richard Dawkins: One God further.

I kind of like 'rationalist', or 'free-thinker'. I could go with 'humanist', though. There's an organization that came up with the catchy word 'Brights' - "The international constituency for individuals whose worldview is free of supernatural and mystical elements. The ethics and actions of a Bright are based ... "

I think that might be OK... particularly since we would obviously have to refer to our opposites as 'Dims'... which somehow seems appropriate.

Nope. I like atheist just fine.

Maybe we should define ourselves as a military order, so that people stop referring to "Atheists" (capitol A) as a cult, or as another religious order.
