There are so many but if your buying a new computer or upgrading you want to go with an XP or perhaps in the near future vista.
but windows 1.0 , 2.0 ,3.0 ,95 , 98 ,98 second edition, 2000 , ME , XP home , Xp professional , Xp media center , vista series. Are most of them I know I am missing at least 1 or two.

before telling the types of operating system i will say what is meant by operating system.
An operating system is a collection of software programs that controls and maintains the hardware(includes all devices installed in computer internally or externally) and software(includes driver as well as application softwares) resources in the computer.
The different types of operating systems are
1) Microsoft windows XP,98,2000,2003,ME,NT.,
2)LINUX --- FEDORO CORE.,
3)MS-DOS-- MS DOS 6.22s latest
4)MAC-OS--- MAC OS 9 is latest in this version
5)UNIX
6)IBM OS
Among these the most widely used OS is Microsft windows ,and others comes the next.
windows is user friendly there are service pack 1,2,3 available as latest versions.
