They can't get a woman in their own country so they come to Thailand. Here the women throw themselves at these guys to have the chance to get out of the country. Thailand is a very poor country and most Thai women would do anything to have a better life even if it means to marry the first old male foreigners coming.

Based on lots of misconceptions about Thai women. Like the Yanks have of Philippines before during the Marcos days.
The key thing is that the Thai ladies need to make a living and being from the farmland, they do not have much skills except socialising. Being accommodating as is their nature, they are actually being taken advantage of and just could not complain. So they bear with it and continued. And they all hope to find a man who will be willing to take them as his wife and break from this chain.
Same story when I was in the Philippines in the go-go bars.
The problem is that the foreigners think ofthem as easy conquests and easy preys. And though the local laws are against this, most got scot-free because the locals do not press charges. And these people go back and get more oftheir friends back to do the same. Hence this misconception.
Had the Thai authorities been more pro-active, I think many of these foreigners will be in jails now.

Thailand is a relatively cheap place to visit and it is very beautiful. Food, drink, lodging, golf, clothes, and yes, even sex, (as others have noted) is cheap. And yes, I think you do see less than stellar looking guys looking for action from attractive girls but I bet that happens on steet corners in the States or Europe as well.
I go there with my wife (3 times so far) and we love it. Great beaches, fun atmosphere and the people are friendly. I've had numerous massages without any "funny" business. Certain cities (Pattaya) and areas (Patpong & Patong) are more notorious for the skin trade than others. Didn't notice any under-age prostitutes in the night market go-go bars we went into (most looked around or above late teens) but I'm sure some were. I doubt anybody cards or checks and I'm sure there are 17 year olds smarter about sex than some 27 year olds. Hopefully, Thailand has tough rules regarding deviants/perverts and if not they can and should pass more laws to cut the bad stuff out.

I wouldn't take that all of the single male foreigners come to Thailand for sex trade. It's promisingly true... yes. But some of them are expats living and working here. some of them are young tourists from UK and Europe as travelling here are pretty cheap and apart from that... we have a beautiful country. Beach and Culture and are well known for the most nice and warm people.
Dont take it would be all about sex. Other parts of world have the prositutes as well. USA, Netherlands, Philliphines, Malaysia or even Singapore.

Okay, I'm editing my answer after reading some later comments. I know Thailand is a beautfiul country and the people are friendly and lovely. And not all single male foreigners are there for sex. But on US television we see news stories very frequently about American creeps going there just for sex...maybe the media here has overblown the whole story. But I think the guys who go there to exploit teens and kids deserve a horrible fate. They're despicable.

How many of the people answering this question have actually been to Thailand ? Yes it is true that some men go there for sex ,but 90 % of that industry will never be seen by tourists , it exists as part of the culture here , and as for the poor expoited girls , some of them make a lot of money from various older western boyfriends so who is exploiting who ?

I agree to sand and John d. the women here in Thailand is very aggressive (than the women in US.) they do what ever it take to get out here in Thailand even the guy is to old to be there boyfriend or husband or even the guy is married they don't.

The night life and the girls. The American dollar goes a long way there. Guys that I spoke to say it is more than the sex the women
treat them better. Asian women are seen as more submissive and willing to please their men. I don't agree with all the negative talk about American women but believe some of it to be valid. I don't judge the women in the sex industry or the customers. The world's oldest profession will always exist.

if you are a male and come to thailand only for sex then you are a real loser. i have been to thailand 4 times (not for sex either). thailand is very beautiful country with friendly people. yes there are prostitutes there also. if more countries would invest in business in thailand then women wouldnt have to prostitute.

SEX, the sex trade of Thailand is known throughout the world. It is a sad thing, because you always hear about young girls forced into prostitution there, and the thing that happen to them, even if they do what they are told to do. They have a hard life there.
