It takes a certain amount of narcissism and ignorance to accept the idea of a higher power and the fact that the human race is the center of the universe. I do not possess a high level of either of those qualities. Intellect seems to act as teflon to religious thought, those lacking in intellect seem to have an easier time with religion sticking to them.
Believing in Gods and a creator is a shortcut to thinking. There is no advancement in that train of thought, just stagnation. I live for the search for truth, not to have other peoples make believe stories spoon fed to me. I also reject fear and have little need to be accepted by others...more traits shared by dim witted theist types.

Well, I agree with one comment that stated "Everyone is born atheist, one is made religious".....
I became atheist because religion never really played any important role in my life. Religion never benefited me in any way (although it does benefit most people) and I don't feel that it plays an honest role in my system of morality. This coming from a person within a very-Christian family.

People are atheists because they are too lazy to find a religion that suits them. You'll find that most atheists aren't atheists at all, but just anti-Christian. They assume that Christianity is the only religion and don't bother to even get off the couch and search for themselves.
I am pagan (wiccan). I can feel the spirit of God living in all things. I have seen magick work first hand.

I am not an atheist, but I don't think people become anything, it is a slow process of learning through out one's life that one picks up on what they believe or don't believe.

I feel that requiring the presence of a creator god belittles the sheer scientific wonder and majesty of the physical universe. The way our universe operates and sustains itself is nothing short of stunning, and it doesn't need a humanistic creator god behind it to give it coherence and credence. It is already here and it was not made in seven days; it formed itself over millions of years and it is so, so stunning.
Life is magnificent and our very existence impossibly improbable and lucky. God could not compare to the wonder of our universe, and I don't need the threat of hell or the bribery of heaven to behave like a decent person. Thank you.

We find god because we are scared of what is to come we find our self's saying "if god wills it" its just a way to play it safe and not fell bad if it dose not happen if Simeon dies they say "god thought it was there time" it also a nice way to explain what happens to you when you die. people were looking for answers to questions that had none so people started to give awsners that needed no explanation. i take responsibility for everything i do so i don't need god or any other type of thing i believe in me but to tell the truth i am not atheists i am agnostic ^^

I've always been Atheist. I totally agree with the second answer. We all were born Atheists. the only reason you believe in a god is because someone told you about it and forgot to tell you that it's all make believe.
I was told about this fairy tale and just never believed it. Simple as that.

The word "become", implies change. I was never religious, I've always been Atheist. I do not believe in believing. I have no faith in faith. Definition of faith: merely taking one's word as truth, without questioning it. This is what troubles me. You see, I think, therfore I am. If I believe, faithfully, I am not.

I was born an atheist....all people are born atheists. The only reason you believe the Bible and God is because people told you to. You aren't born believing a book you don't know.
