It is called a eulogy. Just write it from your heart and you will be fine.

i am sorry to hear of your loss.

The word I think you are looking for is "eulogy." A eulogy is a tribute and/or praise for a person who has died. It is a good thing usually to tell some very nice story about something wonderful this person did and how it shows some very good quality about them. Also it can be nice if you can tell some personal story about how the person affected your life in a good way. You may want to check with people involved with planning the funeral to see how much time you will be allowed to speak if you will be speaking. If you stay real and just tell some reasons why you thought the person was special then you really cannot go wrong. Good luck and remember that you sometimes do not have to say much to the friends and family - just being there and showing that you truly care is often the best support. Try to keep your eyes open to see if anyone needs anything like a ride or directions or help carrying flowers to the car after the funeral, whatever. Just stay aware and try to find opportunities to do random acts of kindness.

You mean you're writing a letter to the family? You're writing something in the reception book at the funeral? People are collecting letters about the deceased? You're going to give a eulogy, or talk about the deceased at the funeral?

Basically, talk about something nice or funny or poignant that you remember about the deceased, what they meant to you, and how much they will be missed.

My sincerest condolences is the best thing to say. What more can you? Aside from I'm sorry for your loss and my thoughts and prayers are with you and the family during this difficult time. Hope this helps.

Whoops just read it again, sounds like your delivering the eulogy. This one's all on you. You obviously knew the person well. Talk about their good qualities.

You need to write how you remembered this person. Things like: sadly missed, fondly remembered, a void in your life, emptiness and sorrow for yourself and the family who the deceased belonged to.
Talk from you heart, write like you express if you were saying it loudly.
Think about the feelings that you shared with that person and the sorrow that will be present. Write about it.
Mostly, in your letter offer your assistance to that family forever and always.

Love and joy, you can do it.
