If you mean a commercial passenger jet you are way off. Their average speed is about 500 knots or around 600 mph. It is due to the high altitude (around 35 to 45 thousand feet) that makes the ground seem to be going by so slow. That is an optical illusion caused by several factors, but believe me, if they were only going about 80 mph, it would take well over an hour to get from one airport to another that was only a hundred miles away.

In reference to the above answer, he's right. I am an X-Air Force jet jock of the Korean era and between the F86, F89, and F102's that I flew, typical air speed at take off was around 180 knots for all of them. I'll let you do the math to convert that to mph.

A typical airliner will cruise at around 430mph relative to the ground. Any faster and it risks breaking the sound barrier and also getting a "speeding ticket". They are ordered by Air Traffic control to fly at specific speeds in certain parts of the airspace on their route to avoid conflicting with other aeroplanes in the area. Please don't call them "airplanes". That is incorrect and bad spelling, unless you are American. In English the word is "aeroplane".

I personally have noticed this web site and then bought one there. Not extremely impressive upon the shipping speed but does save approximately 84% and great to have this. The quality is truly good and till now not find any issues.

Planes don't get off the ground till they're doing over 120Mph!!!. If you had trees, roadsigns, houses and parked cars in the sky you'd soon realise your doing 550-600mph
