Vitamins are not drugs, therefore they are not likely to have a rapid 'drug-effect'.
Many vitamins and minerals are critical for energy production by the body's cells. B12, B6, B1, B2, B3, Folate, Magnesium and others are needed for energy metabolism. Many of these nutrients are deficient in modern diets, so a quality multi-vitamin/mineral supplement is a good idea (as recommended by the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2002).
However, taking a supplement will not likely give you any 'sudden burst of energy'. For example, B12 is needed for the formation of red blood cells that carry oxygen to your tissues. A severe, long-term deficiency can cause an anemia (megaloblastic anemia). But, it will take many days/weeks of high dose supplementation for your body to begin building healthier red blood cells.
So, if you are feeling tired, a quality supplement is a good idea (Centrum and One-A-Day are the 'junk foods of vitamins' and do not qualify as a good supplement. See your Chiropractor, Naturopathic Physician, or certified Nutritionist for a quality supplement; or go to your local health food store.)
Keep in mind that there are many possible causes of chronic tiredness, such as: Vitamin/mineral deficiencies, Anemias, Thyroid disorders, Chemical/heavy metal toxicities, Chronic infections, etc.
Hope this was helpful. Best wishes.
