Miracles are when God "tampers with" things that are normally laws of nature/physics in order to make things happen that do not follow such laws.
He performs them because it suits him to do so.
Miracles exist because God can do anything and does.
He created the world as he saw fit. God need not intervene, he chooses to do so. Why "must" he? Sometimes it suits his purposes to change around the effects or consequences of some action carried out by a being or beings with freewill. Other than that, I can't tell ya, since I don't know the mind of God.
Miracles prove God exists to the heart and soul. To the eyes, it's a whole other story. The evidence of this world is very strong, and even people of strong faith sometimes have a hard time believing what they are seeing when it goes against physical laws and whatnot. There are many levels upon which one can know God--and there are levels upon which one knows the cosmos. In other words, there are different levels of proof, and sometimes they appear to be in conflict. If a miracle proves to me that God exists, it may prove it to my soul...but my eyes (read: mind) may still have trouble believing.
Make sense? Human beings are complex contraptions, in other words. There are many ways of knowing things. I have myself known things through hunches and feelings--have known precise things that happened to friends who were thousands of miles a way, at the time it happened to them. There is much evidence that says this isn't possible, and yet it happened. Just for example.

The age of miracles is past! The Lord gave certain people the power to perform miracles at a time when the Bible was still in the process of being written. The reason for this was so that the words of the apostles & Desciples and others could be confirmed by their works so that people would believe. Contrary to the belief of many, miracles were limited to a certain age only and ceased when the last Apostle died. We are warned in the Bible not to believe everything that appears to be a miracle as the Lord knows Satan can perform what appears to be a miracle as well. What is happening today are not miracles of God as they ceased ages ago. A good case in point is during the tribulation satan will have such power as written in Revelations CH.13 V11-15 This is a clear warning to not believe everything that appears to be a miracle. Hope this helps!

Science isn't made to explain the inexplicable. It is rather made to explain the "possible". Everything physical that happens in our lives can simply be considered part of the "possible", thus can be explained well by science. If something unusual and apparently peculiar thing happens in the midst of an impossible situation, then you can call it a "miracle". Then you may say that God already wishes to intervene. Miracles aren't intended to cheat the perfection of this world. They are the greatest prize of faith. Unless we rely to him completely in a tormenting situation, we will never be able to experience his wonders. Through this miracles, his glory and power are revealed without him being seen. Try to believe completely, after all doubts of his reality only proves that there is something in you that really wants to seek truth which eventually but unknowingly proves his reality.

I believe that sometimes a miracle is performed for those who have been faithful; a healing so to say. Everyday believing that GOD would do what he said HE could and so HE delivers.
Sometimes I believe they are performed to inspire GODs people.
Other times they are performed to prove a point ( as in when Moises took the slaves from Egypt)
And finally I believe that miracles build peoples faith.

We see them as miracles because they go so far beyond what we understand is possible in the ordinary world, and it must require the power of the Creator. Maybe it is not a special event in God's world, maybe more business as usual.
With enough miracles you may not need faith, you could have rock solid confidence in God. Wouldn't that be better than faith?

God performs miracles for the purpose of interacting with those who follow him.
God does not HAVE to intervene in the world; he chooses to do so the way an artist enjoys interacting with his creation.

Christian Faith is not a Blind Faith. It is a Rational Trust in the Christian God based on evidence and history with the Christian God.
Please be aware that there is scientific and intellectual evidence for the existence of God (e.g., see http://www.godsci.org/gs/godsci/evidence.htm)
I used to be an atheist. Over a period of time however, I grew convinced of the existence of the Christian God, and ultimately committed my life to Christ (e.g., see http://www.godsci.org/gs/chri/testimony/seek.html ).
Cordially,
John

Maybe you and I have a different idea of what faith is. Faith to me, is not a leap in the dark. I have concrete and tangible reasons for my faith. I know God exists.
Miracles are not limited to God. Satan is very cunning and will actually indwell the coming anti-Christ who will work miracles.

I dont know if I beleive in god, but I do know miracles do occur.
When my mother was a teenager she was dieing from cancer, her church prayed, and on her death bed the entire church elders came in and did a special prayer as one last chance. A couple days she was alive, and healthy. The doctors couldnt find the cancer, it simply was gone. They wrote in her charts that it was a miracle, and there wasnt any explantion of what happened.
So I say there is hope whenever someone is down

Miracles are religious magic tricks. Religious people pray to fence poles and cheese sandwiches.
People say they talk to aliens, people say they talk to God. The first lot are called nutters, the second lot are called religious. There's a lot of money to be made out of religion and it has become a well rehearsed play over time. Religious people also pray (talk) to fence poles and cheese sandwiches.
Christians are below average intelligence and tend to be very gullible, that's why when a fence pole or a cheese sandwich has an imprint that looks like a religious face, such as God or Our Lady, millions will flock to the spot and worship. It's also known as sheep to the slaughter syndrome.
All religions are just fantasy or mythology or cults, call it whatever you wish. The main religions also have magic tricks which are called miracles in Christianity.
Just watch what happens when a magic trick occurs, for example, the fence pole or cheese sandwich image starts to weep. Just watch how the flock of followers behave. People find it hard to accept reality so escape into fantasy and that’s what religion satisfies. Miracles are all in the mind and are nothing more than trickery.

Ok.... I'm not sure if it was an act of God or coincidence. I was hiking in the Mountains for about 10 days with a group of people... One of these people forgot his Jacket. We were hiking over this Plateau called "Froze to Death Plateau" we found a jacket lying in the rocks. The next day the temperature dropped 40 degrees and it rained, snowed, and hailed on us.... the guy might have caught hypothermia if we didn't find that jacket..... Act of God or coincidence..... whatever it was, I'm glad we found the jacket
