Well, there certainly is a variety of answers for you! The most common appears to be "See a Chiro". However, that would work if it was bone related. But most don't have the money or the patient (no pun intended !) to continue to see a chiro over a long period of time and still be in pain. As one poster stated, most "sciatica" isn't true sciatica, but muscle related. As a massage therapist, I can help relieve the pain of sciatica in one session. Depending upon body posture and sitting/walking/sleeping habits, it might return, so a couple more sessions might be needed. Find a massage therapist that specializes in sports medicine. If it is truly a compressed nerve in the spinal cord, surgery might be needed, but you might want to try an inversion table first. This is where you strap your feet into these boots and turn yourself upside down. It works by relieving the compression on the discs in your back through gravity. You have to start out slow, like 5 minutes a day and work your way up to 30 or more minutes. Its great for circulation and general all-over health. While I am an Herbalist and a holistic practitioner, I really don't see the need to waste money in buying herbals and homeopathics when the cause is mechanical. A simple stretch that your hubby can do is this: Sit on a chair and bring one leg to rest the ankle on the opposite knee. Guys like to cross their legs like this all the time. Then, have him lean forward, trying to touch his forehead to either knee. He probably won't be able to do it, and it will be painful, but when he stands back up, the pain will be lessened. Do this again and hold for 20 seconds if he can. A second simple remedy that massage therapists use on themselves: sit on the floor on a tennis ball. Yep, put it right there under that butt check and roll it around. Yep, it will be painful for a few minutes, but again, he will be able to walk pain-free. These are things that I do for myself. For years I thought that I suffered from sciatica, but only during massage school did I find out that it was the muscles, not true sciatica. Only once did I have true sciatica when I was pregnant and my boy was HUGE!!! (my pelvis rotated outward to make room for my son, and that caused true sciatica). Also, your husband might want to see a Kinesiologist, which is a Chiropractor that specializes in muscle movement.

You really need to see a top neurosurgeon that can read MRI' films along with the best spinal specialist in your area. Trust me, the spinal specialist is hard to find. I am not talking about an orthopedic, they are not the same. It always helps to know where a person is from before recommending these specialist, because if you are in my area, I could tll you who to see. Since I don't know, you need to see a professor of neurology and a specialist he or she would recommend. Sometimes surgery works, sometimes it could irritate things, depending on the severity. This is one of many conditions of my husband, he will be on pain medication for the rest of his life, Vicodin. Sometimes the amount don't do the job but he knows better than to do any in excess. Unfortunately, it is addictive. Don't let anyone put those dam pain shots in your back. There is no miracle medicine for this, either pain medication, or surgery if it will help. Sorry to hear about your pain, believe me, hubby and I know what that is! It sucks! get yourself a good mattress. Sealy, comfort firm depending on your size and weight. If you are a large man, get the Sealy Hargrave set. It will help reilign your back and not hurt so bad at night and when you wake up. You can also try some different matresses out in the store, don't try to save a few bucks when shopping for this. It is worth the money, do it now while you can still get sale prices, it won't be long before the 06 and 07 prices kick in full force. Go to matresses World. P. S. make sure the hosp where you get the films taken is the best one, some don't take impressive films, the doctors can tell you where to get the CT scan, or MRI. CTs are better.

Lie down back to the floor,
knees bent,
feet flat, 3 feet apart.
Keeping your left leg on the floor (knees bent)
raise your right leg and put your right ankle on your left knee.
Grab underneath the left thigh fingers folding (if you can stretch that far) and
raise your left leg up (which is really both legs simultaneously).
Keep your back and head on the floor while doing this.
Then do the same to the other leg.
Hold the position for 15 seconds and make sure to breath.
If you can pull it in a little more after 15 seconds, do so and hold it for another 15 seconds.
Do both sides 3 times each.
You should feel a pull from the area you feel the sciatic pain. Stretch this area daily and it should get better. But if it hurts, slow down, your pulling too far.
