This is a common question and a normal fear that alot of first times have. Unless you are in full labor, it's OK to use the bathroom. Same thing for defecating. However, again, during hard labor, these are things that I guarantee that your friend won't be thinking about as she goes through this wonderful miracle. The doctor is used to everything. The baby's bearing down through the birth canal will sometimes push out a little poop, but the doctor will immediately wipe it away so that it doesn't contact the baby. It's not like it's going to be a big load. A great book to read is "what to expect when you're expecting".

Labor is a natural process that usually takes a while. Using the bathroom at least every hour will help keep the baby moving down and lower the risk of mess and pain. Having a baby is very messy. Blood, amiotic fluid, the membranes, the placenta are all totally unavoidable, natural and to be taken in stride. A little poop or pee isn't going to make or break anything. The hospital is set up for it, and it will be no big deal. The baby will definately be the star!

She'll be on a regular mattress, but the nurse will put down absorbant pads. If you are still laboring and it's not time to push, you can go to the bathroom if you want. If you have an epidural or a spinal block, you'll be numb and not able to walk, so they'll give you a catheter. If you pee or poop during labor, it's fine...it's very common and happens quite often. Nothing to be worried about...doctors and nurses have seen it plenty of times. Tell your friend not to worry. :)

I will assume you are serious and answer you seriously.
The woman, if giving birth vaginally, is straight cathed before delivery to empty the bladder. Otherwise, yes she may pee. The hospital makes it easy for cleanup, don't worry. A woman getting a c-section has a foley catheterizer in place draining the urine into a bag.
Pooping is very common during a vaginal birth, it happened to me each time (a little bit) and it happens to many women but they don't always know about it - or even care. Believe me, your nurses and doctors have seen it all a thousand times and won't think a thing of it. No need for embarrassment, when that head is crowning with all that blood and fluid (and excitement in the room!), no one in the room cares at all about a little poop.

you may be able to get up and go pee - yes you are on absorbent underpads and also the nurse will get you a bed-pan if you ask- labor feels like you have to poop - don't worry about it , your privacy is the last thing on your mind during labor

You pee and you poop. Straight up it happens. If it's not while you friend is pushing a nurse can walk her to the bathroom. She probably won't care when she's actually pushing. It's like labor makes you so careless about people seeing you or what happens. She'll just want that baby OUT!

If you have to do either during labor, you will. If you have an epidural, you will be catheterized every some many hours. If you have to poop, most likely you will push it out when you are pushing. This is normal, we see it all the time. Your doctors and nurses will not think a thing about it. Don't let it bother you, it is a perfectly normal function.

Unless you are in active labor you can go to the bathroom with a nurse with you to catch the baby just in case, however if you are in active labor, you just go while you are pushing, it is not something that you can help and almost all women go through it, so if it happens don't be embarassed.

Both are very .... common while in labor. Don't worry doctors and nurses have seen wrose. It just gets cleaned up, by changing the pads under the woman. That's why they have a large supply available
