I have severe chronic insomnia and haven't slept for 8 hours since august the minium sleep I get now is up to 1 to 2 hours and I'm still alive, it does make you feel like you're gonna go insane at any moment though. however if you cannot sleep at all what so ever not even for an hour then yes you die then as your body goes into a coma and you die through that especially if doctors have ruled out everything and gave you almost everything they can think of.and can no longer help you.

You need a comfortable bed and a room that's quiet, warm and dark enough. Unfortunately this is not always be possible. You might have noisy neighbours, a cold north-facing room, a partner who snores, furniture you have to make do with. But there are some things you can do which will help.

Your bed - put a board under the mattress if it sags, or try putting your bed in a different position. Make sure your bedding is clean and that you are warm enough, but not too hot.
Light - if light troubles you use thicker curtains or putting a scarf or a sleep mask over your eyes. If you feel more comfortable with a little light, leave the curtains open a little or use a night light.
Noise - a common cause of sleeplessness! Use earplugs if it's noise you can't do anything about - or change your attitude towards it. People can sleep through high levels of noise - it's not so much the level of noise but how you feel about it that keeps you awake. Use relaxation exercises to calm yourself and take your mind off it. Take some 'diplomatic action' - e.g. talking to noisy neighbours. Keep a radio/tape player by your bed and use it to mask other noise. And if noise from neighbours continues to be a serious problem - speak to college authorities or the local Environmental Health Officer.

TO Do-
doexercise regularly
stay up until a reasonable bedtime even if you feel sleepy earlier
go to bed only when you are feeling really tired and sleepy
if you can't sleep, get up and only go back to bed when you're really sleepy again
establish a routine that gives you 7-8 hours sleep (though individual needs do vary)
get up at the same time each day
if you're a late sleeper, force yourself to get up earlier
relax mentally and physically for an hour before bedtime
have a warm bath, do some yoga or take a light walk before turning in
make a list of the things on your mind then forget about them
do a security check - but only once!
replace negative thoughts with positive ones e.g. "I can sleep/get back to sleep"
NOT TO DO-
taking stimulants to keep you awake, or sedatives or alcohol to help you sleep
sleeping during the day no matter how tired you are
going to bed when you're stressed, wound up or not ready
having arguments at bedtime or in bed
using your bed for working, watching TV, eating, telephoning - i.e. waking activities
lying in bed awake for more than 30 minutes
eating, drinking or smoking when you get up during the night
falling asleep in front of the TV
drinking too much towards the end of the evening
worrying yourself into not sleeping
getting angry with yourself or the world if you can't sleep - it only makes it worse!

"Now I lay me down not to sleep.
I just get tangled in the sheets.
I swim in sweat three inches deep.
I just lay back and claim defeat...
Lids down, I count sheep.
I count heartbeats.
The only thing that counts is that
I won't sleep...My mind is racing,
filled with lists of things to do
and things I've done.
Another sleepless night's begun..."

3 Steps to Cure Insomnia Forever!

The human body needs sleep to heal and repair itself. Prolonged periods of insomnia can cause you body to break down and become prone to major illnesses. There have been scientific experiments performed where people are kept awake for periods of up to three or four days straight. Tests have proven that they mentally begin to breakdown. Halucinations, and other mental instances were recorded. Blood pressure goes sky high if the body goes too long without sleep too. If the body becomes too stressed, I suppose heart attacks, strokes etc could occur. If you have severe insomnia, I would urge you to seek medical attention so they can help you out.

Maybe from killing yourself from hallucinating...you mind will go into dreaming while you are awake, and who knows what could happen? Try some melatonin, you can get it over the counter in any pharmacy. The brain produces it, but sometimes stress can affect the amounts, and it's harmless. Also, Valerian Root, an herb, is used for relaxation. Try not to drink caffeine after the afternoon.

technicaly yes...longest anyone has "not slept a wink" is 11 days. if your insomnia is like dozing off waking up off and on you cannot and will not die but i cannot say your health will remain ok, i think it can take an advrage of 3-7 days of disturbed sleep to make a person "see things" or not focus that is normal...

Eventually I believe you can if you don't ever sleep. I would see a doctor.
